You can learn or disagree!
I have been on this site for quite awhile and everyone talks about getting info on hound hunting so i decided to give you an overall explanation to what i think and this is just my opionion, and the first lesson is someone else will think differently and they are probably smarter than me so listen to different ideas! Number 1 each hound is different so get to know the strengths and weakness of your hound! Number 2 20% of the hunters catch 80% of the game, those 20% hunt harder and are established with good dogs and usually catch more than the other 80% of hunters! Number 3 i have seen it a couple times but for the most part to catch biggame you have to have an experienced dog or hunt with someone that does! It is possible to train a couple young dogs to catch game but usually the hunter loses interest in hound hunting which i cant blame them, the point is to catch game and it becomes discouraging not to catch and it takes for the most part a couple years or more to get those dogs to catch consistantly! Number 3 buying and selling dogs, for the most part established houndmen very rarely buy dogs, they can get young dogs hunt them with their experienced dogs or they have puppies out of their stock that they raise and hunt! If you can find dogs that are being sold by the 20% hunters you usually get a pretty good dog! If you buy from 80% chances are they have the making to be a dog but are probably not finished to catch consistantly by themselves! Number 4 Don't get to many dogs, i am horrible with this also, if your a cat hunter 2 is all you need, for bear 4 is just right! if you hunt both then use 2 all the time for cats and the other 2 are just for bears until you get them finished then 4 can be hunted on lions! I believe 1 dog is perfect for bobcats and for everydog you put in behind it the chances of catching it drops in half!(established houndmen with excellent dogs are exempt) This should make some conversation!

This guy has been helping me a lot. Im still a little hard headed but have learned a lot from him! I appreciate it a lot. Gives me some good advice, I might have something to say back but he knows that Im listening and taking every word in, he's been doing it WAY longer then me and has opened my eyes to a lot of ideas. So I definetely listen! Well put!

Re: You can learn or disagree!
I just want to add one thing! Everything i know or learn usually goes out the window the next time i turn loose, a person has to know there is so many variables that nothing is for sure with hounds! Just keep in mind anything is possible, good or bad and be willing to solve the problem not ignore it!

Is it just me or is there two lesson number ones on that list. Also I dont think it hurts to have a trainer for the new houndsmen too, I know it has helped me to have a guy like Piglet to look up too and a Trudell doesnt hurt either.
Re: You can learn or disagree!
sounds about right i like one silent faster hound in front on bobcats turn him loose 15min before and then one good nose to the ground barking hound behind him on bobcats

Re: You can learn or disagree!
I have to agree on most of that. Only on the number of dogs do I differ. The more the merrier to a point. If you are hunting hard enough 4 dogs are just not going to cut it on a daily basis! Some get hurt, run down, etc. I started the bear season here last year with eight. 2 weeks later was down to 2 healthy dogs, and a bunch of walking wounded! Hunting everyday though is different than a few days a week. Heck running yotes this year. I have been rotating 6 of mine, and 2 buddies each got 3. We were having a hard time with keeping healthy dogs going. Mostly cut up feet that needed to heal. At least everything is getting a rest now with no snow. Still though 10 -12 is good. then have w packs of 5-6 at all times hopefully.
Lastly, even the experienced hound guys learn something new all the time! At least in the 20yrs of playing with puppies I have had. Always seem to learn something new!! I could just be a slow learner!!

Re: You can learn or disagree!
I agree with ya steve! when i wrote it i was trying to direct it to the newer hunters! I love bear hunting more than cats just for the reason you can hunt alot more dogs on bear. But i see or hear alot of beginners trying to pad their kennels with a ton of dogs and all or most of them being inexperienced dogs or puppies, I was trying to say when starting thats the number of dogs a person should take on in my belief! Nothing beats a bear race with a dozen dogs!lol I personally love hound hunting because i believe it one of the few hunting sports that can be socially enjoyed by more than one or two people! what i mean by that is 5 guys can hunt together, talk the whole time, tell jokes and still be successful! Others like the solitude of just them and their dogs which i respect but i'm a talker!lol
Inchtown: you know my dad was my teacher and i went to inchelium so give me a break lucky i can even read it, let alone count!lol

Re: You can learn or disagree!
Pig, could not agree more. A person starting out should stick with just a pair of dogs at most, and hunt with someone that has been doing it awhile. The amount of works sure goes up with more dogs. Not having a clue what your doing will cause a lot of problems.
