New..Coyote/cat hunting

Post by PineRidge »

Hey guys,
I am getting into hound hunting for cat/coyote.I have experience with beagles on rabbits but thats it.We have a master guide down the road that hunts bear, coyote and cat with plotts and walkers.Well his best plott female got breed by his best male walker and he told me I could have a couple pups.Should these be good coyote, cat hounds? Also how would i go about training them without a training pen..Do i just trap a coyte and let him go with the dogs on him?or just put them on tracks?also will two dogs be enough to run a coyote?we will be trying to shoot the coyote and not let the dogs get it themselves.thanks!

No expert here but I can give my .02

The breed walker/plott should be fine, especially since it sounds like the parents are proven dogs.

For coyotes and cats, its a lot of putting and walking the dogs on tracks til the animal gets jumped.

Its also a lot of putting pups with experienced dogs, either on the cold track or on a jumped animal. In a perfect world its best to get the pups on a hot track (jumped animal) for their first run to wake up a few of those "ancestral" feelings in them. So I'd say your best bet would be to try and go out with your guide friend and tag along so you can toss your pups out with some experienced dogs.

Also, good to work the pups on drags etc when they are young.

And yea, two dogs would be fine on coyotes and definitely fine on cats.

Thats my strategy at least....

I'd just take them for walks and see what happens as they mature. I definately do not like any set up site chases for a dog that has to run a track. Its a bad way to start off.
