Catching coyotes

Does anybody or have you heard of anybody that catches coyotes with just tree hounds? Not running dogs.

blue ticks and english hardly ever carry a gun. get out run sometimes but we catch a few.

I do. Catch some, get out ran some. Dang good chase either way. There are TONS of folks who use trail/tree hounds on yotes.

LCK, do any of these folks who run trail/tree hounds on yotes run on dry ground, particularly in open country, or do they run mostly on snow?

Damn tough to catch a yote in the timber with tree dogs unless you have 6++ inches of fresh snow. Unless the yote wants to get caught, or you wing him with some buckshot.

We run trail hounds to catch but only in the snow in SE MN. We can catch with three dogs but there's usually a lot of truck work blocking the yote so the dogs can catch up to them. If we have plenty of fresh dogs or the yote makes a mistake they can catch one without our help, but not many and we lose a lot of yotes too. Anything is possible, but our trail hounds aren't fast enought to just run them down. They have to trail them to death.

Plus 1 on this. Catching yotes has a lot more to do with conditions than dog power. In the right conditions you can catch nearly every one you jump in short order. Usually the trick in those conditions is to find a track. It sure doesn't hurt though to have a couple dogs that are real good at the game.

No doubt about it. If you get what we call "catch snow", it's pretty much over once you find the track. It usually takes you more time to walk in and get them than it does to catch them. Once the deer and other critters start making trails you'll lose that advantage.

It's too bad you only get those conditions about once every 5 years, but it's sure fun when you do.

Besides, in our area you'll kill way more coyotes with a dog that can stick on the track all day than one that runs 500 mph but still makes losses.

I use tree hounds here in upstate New York. We dont catch alot but we do catch some. Conditions were good yesterday we ran a female 18 miles and with several misses never hit the dogs finally caught her. The snow was fresh and deep in the woods nearly a foot of powder on top of whatever base we have. We dont catch alot unless they have some lead in them but we do catch a few now and then. We hunt big blocks of woods and with the tree dogs the yotes will usually start to circle in the block then we can set up in there and get a shot. We use a little bit of everything to run yotes but I like my blue dogs. Dont get me wrong if a poodle would run a yote I would use it.

I have never been a shooter but we have caught quite a few coyotes over the years. Got outrun a whole bunch too though. The snow would help tremendously but we just dont get much here. The reall truth of the matter is this, until you see a good coyote dog, you wont ever believe there is such a thing. Alot of dogs can run one around in circles to be shot but only the good ones make consistent catches. You best get ready to go through "ALOT" of dogs if you plan on catchin em cause thats what its gonna take. When I say "ALOT", I mean it in a very serious way.

I catch alot with my Walker and some of our Plotts even when conditions are right...Personally i dont think thats much fun tho.. I like sneakin in when they are circleing good and blast em

what type of dogs would you say are best to get them circling?

From my experience tree dogs will make them circle, however as stated we do catch a fair number but its usually after a full days race or perfect conditions.


So I would say your typical tree breed will make 'em circle.

Plus, if you want nice tight circles in say a single swamp just run the thing with one old/slow dog that won't put much pressure on it. I've seen it a lot, coyote is just content staying in its home zone and keeping just ahead of the dog. Doesn't feel too pressured and doesn't feel the need to line out.

Some of the guys in my group run a running/tree hound cross and they do catch some but only in deep snow.They will catch a occasional one in less then ideal conditions. Myself I would rather catch coyotes then shoot them to me there is nothing like walking into the roar of 6-8 hounds baying a coyote.
