what gun
hey everyone. im looking to get a new all round rifle. that im going to make it a real nice one with a good scope and the works. what do you think i should get. i hunt lion bear. with hounds. then i go deer and elk hunting without my dogs. so i need a gun that can do it at a long range to.

hound hunting isnt a sport, its a way of life
Re: what gun
i would go with a tikka t3 light chambered in 27 wsm topped with the best optics that you can afford. This will give you a lightweight long range rifle that will have the knock down power that you need as well as not doing too much damage to a bear or cat at a close range.
Re: what gun
I am a fan of 308,30-06 and to reach abit more i like 338.

In Wyoming lion are a trophy game animal so you have to use a legal size gun according to Game and Fish standards. I am sure it varies from state to state. When lions were reguarded as a predator most guys just used a 22. I just carry a 30-30. I do that because I couldn't hit a bull in the butt with a scoop shovel when it comes to using a pistol. I have never hunted bear so I have no idea what is good. For the Big Game animals I like a 280 Rem. This like everything else is strictly a matter of opinion and individual beliefs. As for one caliber that would be good for all, my son has had good results with his 243 model 77 Ruger. He can load it down for coyotes and load it up for big game. He has killed antelope, deer and elk with the same gun. Some say it is not enough gun for elk. But his seems to do the job. Its all about shot placement. But like everything else it is only a matter of opinion. This just happens to be mine. It's like the two fella's talking and one said if everyone thought like me they would all be chasing my wife, and the other said that if they all thought like him she would be an old maid.
Re: what gun
308 bolt with a 22" barrel. Light weight solid bullet for the up close work and a 172 grain boat tail for the elk and deer. At 22" that barrel wont be hitting every branch in the woods as you would with a 24,26 or 28" inch barrel and the 308 dont lose much with the shorter barrel.

Re: what gun
I like the short mags, 25 wssm, 270 wsm and my personal favorite 7mm wsm. The 25wssm can do it all but shot placement is a little more important than the other two, there is also the 300 wsm and 325 wsm I like to keep it under a 30 cal.
