I have been reading some on dewclaws. Most of what I have read is in favor of leaving the dew claws on puppies unless they show signs of a problem when they get a little older.
Also I found some info on how to remove them by tying dental floss tightly around the entire apendage and letting them fall off.
Do you remove them from your pups before a week old?
How do you remove them?

I've only removed the 1 time. That was with the litter I had a couple of years ago. The vet did it upon the vet check.

we remove them from all the pups you have to do it before there tree dats old have your vet show you how to do it then you can do it your self nothing to it

Thanks, I have an appointment tomarrow they will be 6 days old but the vet said it would be OK. $70 for a litter of 7 actually $3 per pup + $45 for the vet check up. I sure get tired of paying that $45 every time I need a shot or any little thing. does anyone know a good vet in central Utah that will just give a shot without charging to weigh ang check for hernia?

If the pups are least than 6 weeks you can just snip them off with a sharp pair of scissors or take them to a vet. this is cheap while they are young. if you want to remove them off an older pup I have used a tight rubber band tied behind the nail. it will fall of in a week of or. the only concern with the last method is tetnus possibility but have not had any issues myself.

When my last batch of pups were a day old, I took the dews off with a pair of toenail clippers. I tried using a pair of forceps like mentioned in another post but didn't have much luck.

hey guy from santaquin I have a great vet that has worked alot with hounds i dont know if he will cut you a deal or anything but i recommend you take your dogs to him its coleman veternary in north provo 801 812 2077

BWTB what kind of shots are you talking about? I get just about anything I need at Tractor Supply Store or one of my local vet supply stores. I live in Texas and the only thing I can't buy over the counter is rabies vaccine so I have to take my dogs to the vet for that. Antibiotics and vaccine can be purchased at any farm supply store here.
