Bear season is over

Post by BBGH »

Since california bear season is over I have been trying to get out fox hunting. It seems like after every bear season my dogs run right past bobcat and fox tracks it usually takes them a little bit to start catching the varmits again. Does anyone else have this problem transferring from bear to smaller scented game? I guess it's because they have been running with there heads up, they need to slow down and put there nose on the ground.

Only in certain sections. In california we have a dog closure zone which is basically the mountains. But you can train your dogs on varmits in the valleys that aren't closed year around

I took my two younger dogs for a walk yesterday afternoon when I got home from work. They both drifted off the trail into this drainage where it is pretty brushy. All of a sudden 6 bucks and probably 10-15 of there lady friends come running out. I was pissed because even though they are young they now better. Well I was about to use my training system when I noticed that they where opening going the other way that the deer came out. I decided not to lay them down and make sure 100% that a deer was in fact what they where after. Well the shock collar gods where on me because they crossed a road that was covered in mud. I looked down in the mud and to my surprise they where not running deer they where running Mr. gray. I was instantly pumped, not pissed. They ran that stinking thing for over an hour. I saw the fox cross halfway through the race and he was a good 5 minutes in front of the dogs. I didn't think they where going to catch him when all of a sudden they stopped and treed. I sprinted to them to find the gray up in a shrub oak bush, so i went climbing up it and out that fox came. They ran him for another ten minutes and started treeing again. This time when I got to him he was all the way on top of a huge digger pine. He was not coming out of the tree anytime soon. I loved on the dogs and pulled them off of the tree and walked them over to a creek so they could catch there breath and get some water. About that time my wife called me on my cell phone and said dinner was almost ready. What a great ending to a long day of work and stress. Man I love these dogs!

Right on Cody! Many would have started pushing buttons right from the first site of the off game.

Take it easy!
