Postby Benny G » Sun Feb 14, 2010 12:18 pm

Hello-My name is Benny Griffin. I hunt lions mostly in the dirt. I have hunted with some of the old time lion hunters who have passed on. I know some of the top guys who are still alive and getting long in the tooth. Today my blood lines are a mix of Larry Hendrix, Steve Smith, Terrel Shelley, Richard Dickerson, With some going back to Richard Holcumb, Dale Lee, and Chalie Leeder. So far, I have enjoyed SOME of the discussions. LOL

I was born and raised around Phx., but for the last 21 years I have lived in southeast New Mexico. One of my favorite hunts was with George, Rink, & Brian Goswick. Scott Dierringer was there as well as Felipe Perez- a sheep rancher. Lions had been killing Felipe's sheep on his summer country between Ashfork and Seligman south of I-40. When we left the pick-ups early that morning only half of us were riding, the others (me omong them) were walking. What the heck, I was young and skinny. The dogs trailed those lions (we later learned by catching them at a different time that there were 3) way into the night. Some where around 2:00 AM we got up to the edge of a canyon that we couldn't navigate. There was no moon, and we couldn't chance it! We quit the dogs and tied to sleep some. Sweaty saddle pads, and not enough to go around, made a long, COLD night. Some time in the night the dogs gave up and came into "camp". At daylight we started the long slow trek back to the pick-ups. We were tired, hungry, and thirsty. I remember drinking out of a cow track in the road because I wasn't wiating any longer! When we got back Scott's son Sam was glad to see us as he had stayed at the trucks alone all night. I believe he was ten years old at the time. Today Sam is a highly accomplished lion hunter himself.
