i have a walker thats 10 months old and he treed a squirrel today and used his nose to do it and hes treed on a couple caged coon so do you think hunting him tonight tommorrow night and or saturday night will do him good or bad?right before we went walking he went for a rabbit skin an gotta whipping for it and when jumped a rabbit he didnt do anything to it so he learns quick very quick...got him at 6 months off chain 1st time chased a coon into a brush pile and him b&t and mountain fiest brought it out and he killed it so do you think he can trail one by himself?

not going to catch them at home...take him out as much as possible, but dont be trying to break him yet, till he knows what hes supposed to be doing.

I agree on this one for sures getting out as much as possible is what makes a dog.
Release the Hounds!!!!

at ten months its not unusual for a hound to be catching coons. so most definitely take him hunting it's not hard for a well bred pup to train himself on coon with a little discouragement in chasing trash. teach him to handle you've shown him animals climb and he knows to bark now its exposure and keeping him from developing bad habits. good luck and don't expect perfection for awhile.

Re: should i go tonight?
i no other dogs this age can do it but i havent layed a single scent trail for him and i dont have another dog to run him with so i was wondering if he could do it by himself with out another dog and without any past scent experience..unless he smelled them while he chased them with his eyes and loud mouth..i think if he finds a fresh track he will go for it cuz he did on a house cat track and a couple squirrels that he found when walking thrugh the woods and he never barked on track once til he go to the tree and made sure for 20 min it was in that tree

The most important thing in a young dog is what is BRED into him. Most well bred pups will run and tree naturally without experience.....they do not have to be SHOWN. Much of what you hear or read about today in the way of "training" (such as caged animals, scents and drags) is more entertainment to the owner than it is benefit to the pup.
