Loggers and Tree Fallers
I was wondering how many members on here have worked in the woods. It seems like a lot of the guys I know used to cut timber or work in the rigging in some form. Might be a perk of the career that you have the time to run hounds also.

Re: Loggers and Tree Fallers
I started working in the woods right out of highschool. set chokers under a yarder and always wanted to be a cutter. They made more money and always got to leave earlier. I heli logged in oregon, washington, and montana. I finally got a chance to get broke in cutting when i was 22. I have been falling timber off and on for 10 yrs. I went 15 month without cutting a tree until 2 weeks ago. I was drunk and a buddy of mine has his own contract with a couple loggers. One thing led to another and before we were done talking i said i would come cut for him untill i left again. That was on a sat night when sun night rolled around and the phone rang about 8 o clock and i looked at the caller i.d. i was thinking to my self your an idiot. Well i have been cutting since then . Talk about being out of shape. Of course there is a bluff that runs right thru the middle of the unit. They pulled the yarder over last week. They were hanging off sideways so only one guide line was being used and they pulled a stump. Needless to say we are way ahead of them .

Probably has a lot to do with why I am still doing it. Certain contracts we'll work in the woods but most of what I do is urban arboriculture. The flexibility is a nice perk.

Re: Loggers and Tree Fallers
tuff industry to work in . Up in Maine lots of pulp mills and saw mills closed .some were , are , owned by foreign investors . They don'rt worry too much about everyday working joe.types. My son is retired military he only works 2-3 days per week to earn his play money . Don't know how the family guys are coping with it.
Last few trips up to BC most of the guides were out of work guys from the logging industry .Just does not seem to be much need for dimensional lumber or pulp products right now.
But hey don't worry about it our GREAT PREZ will take care of all our worries
The worthless POS that he is

Re: Loggers and Tree Fallers
I worked on the riggin for a couple years out of high school then starated falling trees in northwest oregon. Did that for12 years. this last fall i moved to Sheridan, wy. i found work running a saw but is just cutting "weeds" hope to go on fires this summer and with the outfit i am working for and cut real trees.
Re: Loggers and Tree Fallers
I work in the woods full time and do concrete on the side. It is a very short working season for us in this area. We normaly have four to five months of in the winter. It works out pretty good for cat season. Also do a little guiding throughout the year.
