go with the best range you can afford it can be a real help on that one time they top a ridge and get into javelina. deer breaking can be bad, but about any dog worth a shit will fight back when attacked. but not many are going to run into a herd of javelina and come out not needing stitches. so being able to get your dog to back out of a javelina fight is real important. it's worse then skunk killing for some dogs, the damn things are so easy to find and are great sport for a young dog. to be honest I've had more problems with javelina then anything else. I learned this quick one morning my hounds struck a lion track and where trailing along the ridge and "BOO -HOOING" CJC's infamous quote. but moving well.I noticed movement across the canyon on the east slope in the morning sun turned to look and there's a herd of twenty to thirty javelina under the oaks. they're all standing and following those hounds with their snouts like a compass needle. now I know there's no way the blind shit's could see those hounds but they started down the canyon and would trot a ways then stop then line out and move some more.I figured the hounds were in the general direction of their escape route and that's what was causing the confusion. Then I noticed that the herd had actually split and half where still up under the oaks. well the first group had gotten close enough to the hounds to charge and that's exactly what happened and they hit those hounds hard the ensuing mess was BAD. I tried calling the dogs in but every time they turned they'd get hit in the hind end. so they'd turn and roll the offending pig and start over again. for legal reasons the story ends there. I will state this May have happened in a foreign country and DID happen years ago. Since that time it's provided some insight to some instances frequently that I might not have understood and blamed on the hounds. If your hounds ever run into them always check between their hind legs and across the back end for slashes and punctures. unfortunately I have a stack of javelina stories. I do enjoy a lion thats a confirmed pig eater
