I had a lion jump out of a crappy tree and land right on top of one of my hounds. Somehow in the process he tore some ligaments and got a bone chip in his wrist on his front leg. I took him to the local vet where I was hunting for some x-rays. The vet gave me some I beleive inflamtion meds and said he should be more or less healed up in a month. I layed him up about a week while I finished up hunting where I was and had him re x-rayed by my local vet who promptly put him in a solid splint for 6 weeks. He has had the splint off about a month and a half now, he still limps almost all the time, sometimes even packs that leg every other step or so.
I was just wanting to hear from some other guys that might have run into this. My vet is still optimistic that he'll be able to hunt again in six months or so, but im starting to worry a bit. Any one had something similar happen? What was the outcome?
Thanks

Re: Torn Ligaments/Bone Chip in Wrist
I had one of mine get his front right leg broken and in the joint between the leg and foot turned into a large hard lump. my vet said he had it fractured and gave him anti inflammatory shots right in the joint. He didn't stop limping for almost a year...it is still has a big lump, but he doesn't limp anymore and he is back to running bear with no problems. Give it time. Good luck
Re: Torn Ligaments/Bone Chip in Wrist
i have had some hard running dogs pop tendons and tear them loose etc. my experience is that some may get better with out a limp or anything but most will start to limp and go on three legs after a few hard days or a real serious sprint on rough ground. i don't see how a bone chip is going to reattach by it's self but if it's started to when they splint it then it should heal. how much of a problem it will be I could only guess. can you stand to lay him up for six months?
Re: Torn Ligaments/Bone Chip in Wrist
Thanks for the words guys, Pegleg, Im definatley willing to lay him up that long if thats what it takes. I figure when they hunt there guts out for a guy and get hurt doin it they should be allowed ample time to heal (if they are going to heal that is.) Im just feelin a little sorry for him mopin around not bein able to do much so I thought I would ask as I figured some of you all would have seen a deal like this before. Thanks again!

Re: Torn Ligaments/Bone Chip in Wrist
Give him two more weeks.
Ask vet to put splint on other leg.
After about a month take it off.
Start him out slow, need to harden him up.
Just another thought.
