Moved the topic here hoping to get a reply to it in this section.
How many of you have seen this. I have had beagles and know others that have owned/had beagles that do this. I've seen some that grew out of it and others that had to be culled. Never seen it in the big hounds though cat/bear/coon hounds. What do you all think starts this and do you think it's a hereditary, and what do or would you do to correct it?

Dog Tracking

Re: Dog Tracking
are you talking about trailing other dogs? if so yes I've had them do it and they'll do it to find each other or me. the young ones even give tongue for a while. usually they get past it so fast you hardly notice it and it usually comes from pen raised hounds. I haven't seen it much in yard raised pups. I also have never seen it interfere with trailing game or to such a point that they were culled. I'd be interested in your training hunting methods and look to them more then breeding. if it does show up as a genetic trait then you could be sol

I to would be interested in how they were started. Babbling is learned as well and if not put to a stop early becomes a cancer.

Re: Dog Tracking
I know of several beagles, all were yard raised but one and started themselves on wild hare by 4 months old, first time they ran with old dog they started dog tracking, also the older dog that was used was a slower dog that pups were raised around and could stay up with. I've had my young cat hounds trail me before, even open a little when they would loose track of were I was but it never turned into a issue.

A man is not very smart that can,t find his wife 2 jobs.
And any wife should be able to support her man and a pack of hounds.

Re: Dog Tracking
I had a pack of coyote hounds for 40 years
and never seen my dogs trail another dog but once
We would hunt every sat & sun no matter what the weather was
4 or 5 picksup would be there.
On this day it was cold & my self & one other showed up.
We run several patches & found no coyotes
Finally I said I will run this last section & we will go home.
I turnes 6 loose on the 1/2 mile line, we then got on each side to listen & watch for coyote.
They opened , so I hurried to the next road so I could see them when they crossed.
Sure enough, something big & black crossed with dogs about 100 yards behind & they went into the next section about a half mile & bayed up.
they would usely kill the coyote & I would not have to walk in, but they just kept baying & baying
So I had to walk in.
When I got there they were in a good sized water hole about 2 feet deep water
On closer look it was a big black shaggy dog, I would say cross between a Rot
& some shaggy breed, it was not a coyote cross.
They were trying to kill him but he was to big & tough.
I tryed to call them off but no luck.
They would not quit, I cused & every think & could think of before I wading into the cold cold water.
I finally went in & I had left my leash in the pick up
My buddy finally showed up & he had no leash.
We took out belts off & he stayed on the bank & I would bring one at a time & he would hold them.
My dogs were crazy to fight that thing.
We finally got the dogs back to the truck & I was really cold & wet.
We went home then
That was the only time my dogs ever run another dog that I know of.

Thought about what I wrote and decided it was a really dumb thing to put on here
