California Fish and Game Commission to Decide on Bear Issues
On April 21 the California Fish and Game Commission will be having a teleconference meeting to decide on the changes for the 2010 bear season. It can be watched live starting at 9:30 am pacific time on a link from the California Fish and Game Commission Meeting webpage. I will update the forum tomorrow after the meeting. We'll see where the commission really stands on bear and hound hunting. If they screw us I will let them know in person at the next commission meeting in May in Stockton. -Pete

In retaliation to the proposed regulation changes, the HSUS is threatening to put an anti hound hunting initiative on our 2012 ballot.

Re: California Fish and Game Commission to Decide on Bear Issues
Nothing happened. They delayed again with the intention of taking no action on any of the proposals. One commissioner even said with the momentum the HSUS has there will probably be no bear hunting in CA by 2011. Wrong. When it comes down to it, it's not really about bear hunting, it's about freedom. Take away my freedom and I've got nothing to loose. "When the people fear their government there is tyranny. When the government fears the people, there is liberty." -Thomas Jefferson.

Re: California Fish and Game Commission to Decide on Bear Issues
I may be a, "glass half full" kind of guy on this issue but I think DFG was looking out for us on this. They didn't deny it, just put it off to try to make sure HSUS doesn't put it an inititive on the ballot that would end it all, as they have threatened to do. And so what if it doesn't pass? We have a fairly liberal season now, especially if your willing to travel, and generally the most we lose because of the quota is two weeks. I'd rather keep what we have than lose it all. Unfortunately politics is involved and we just have to roll with it. As far as GPS collars, I could care less. I hunted before tracking collars (although I'd hate to go back but I would) and I see lots of people hunting hounds that never would turn a dog loose if it weren't for tracking collars and GPS collars will increase that. I'm not against them but if thats going to hurt us on seasons or quotas then forget them. I hope it works out for us all.
Re: California Fish and Game Commission to Decide on Bear Issues
Yesterday was neither a victory nor a defeat for us...rather, a stalemate. The Department's motivations to recommend the No Change option are a reflection of their need to address some of the stipulations of CEQA before they can present the proposals to the Commission once again. For everyone's reference, I have attached a copy of the memo the Department sent to the Commission.
With the decision of the Commission to invite the Department to re-submit the proposals, we can anticipate the process (presentation, discussion, 45-day comment period, decision, etc) to come to a conclusion in the early fall...not soon enough to be in effect by the start of the bear season, but if any modifications are accepted, they could be implemented in time for a portion of this season.
I am disappointed in the comments made by Commissioners Rogers and Sutton when they raised concerns with bow hunting, tip switches, and possibly "instigating" a ballot initiative were they to adopt any changes. Maybe I am dumb, stubborn, and an ideologue, but I for one think it is foolish to allow one's self to be influenced by a supposed threat from the antis. Whether or not they do intend to introduce an initiative to ban hounds for the hunting of bear in 2012, it should have no impact whatsoever on the adoption of logical and reasoned modifications to the bear regulations. Whether it will...well, that is another matter entirely.

It seems a shame that the California Fish and GAME are not relying on sound game management practices instead of worrying about being blackmailed by the HSUS . Remember this is an election year find out what the canidates views on this matter is . For now is there anything the average guy can do ?
