I've got two pups sick. They've both had shots. Had to take one to the Vet yesterday and the Vet said she tested positive for Parvo. We left her there overnight on IV fluids. Now this morning I got up and my male wasn't jumping at the door like usual so, I went and looked for him. Found him looking droopy and vomiting. I gave him some Pepto and got him to drink. 10 minutes later he was vomiting again. Just called the Vet and my female is doing good and now she wants us to bring the male in. We just paid $400 to keep the female overnight and can't afford to do the same for the male. What can I do? Is it possible for them to get Parvo after having their shots? Any ideas?

Were those vaccines kept refrigerated?

How old were they when they got their shots and how many have they had?

We got the female at 16 weeks and was supposed to have had 3 rounds of shots. We got the male at 12 weeks and he also had 3 rounds. We gave him a fourth just to be safe, but the Vet said we should give shots once a month from 6 weeks to 6 months. We've raised two litters in the same pen we've been keeping these two and never gave more than 3 and sometimes 4 rounds without ever having a problem. I always spray bleach before we have any new pups just as a precaution. There are some really good pups out there right now that I'm really interested in, but I'm afraid to bring any in. If I vaccinate like the Vet said and keep up the bleaching will I be ok? If I can't have any pups for 7-10 years, I might as well get out of the sport! I just got into it and don't want to give up now, but I can't afford to spend $400 in Vet bills for each pup before I can even train it.

As far as cleaning your pens that is all good. but you can walk out to your front yard or go to a friends house. and bring it home or by taking them out for a walk. as for the $400 vet bill we saved one with gatoraid and a turkey baster one time

We did kind of the same thing years ago with Pepto and Pedialite. The only reason they went in is because I can't believe they actually got Parvo. The only thing I can figure is that maybe the guys I got them from didn't vaccinate like they said, but they both seemed to be upstanding hunters as far as I could tell. I'll just have to give them shots every month I guess.

It is ridiculous to give pups vaccinations every month. Are you sure they do not have coccidiosis?

I watched the Vet do a fecal test for parvo and she said it was positive. I'm with you Briarpatch, it doesn't make any sense to me either. We've got the female back from the Vet and she is almost back to her normal self. We are giving the male IV fluids and meds for vomiting called Reglin I think. After 24hrs on fluids my female did a 180, so I'm hoping my male does the same. The vet said either vaccinate pups every month or don't get any under the age of 1yr for the next 7 yrs. What would you do?

I would make sure that any pup I get has had a series of 3 shots at the correct times (starting about 2 weeks after it has been weaned) and not worry about it any more. JMO after many years of experience.

My Vet says 6,9,12,&15 weeks.

Also get ahold of Hagarman on here he just went through the same thing, (tested possitve for Parvo, but wasn't) he cured it himself.

7,10, 13, 16 if the dam is up to date. If she was not up to date on vaccines, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18. Always last booster past 4 mo. I don't think those pups were on a proper vaccine schedule.

That's kinda what I was thinking. With each pup I asked when do they need their next shots and both said they were good til 6 months old and they'll need a rabies shot. That's it!

With parvo type symptoms give your dog pediolite. You may have to use a syringe to get it down them. Just be careful you don't get it in their lungs. A vet explained to me it's not the parvo virus that kills the dog it's the dehydration and other problems caused by not drinking/eating.

Yeah, I've always heard that was the case, but my concern was why did they get it in the first place. We've been giving the male IV fluids at home(my wife's a nurse) and he seems to be responding well. He's perked up quite a bit, so I think they'll both be ok now. With the money I've spent on them, I'd hate to lose them before they even get to hunt! Thanks to everyone for the help. Dan
