I've seen a few dogs do this. Usually to hide what they can't or don't want to eat. My Crash dog was a very picky eater, but certain things, he'd take in his dog house and hide. Usually treats, and sometimes throw dirt on his food when we were at camp.
I watched his full brother bury a rawhide strip about 15 different times, out camping this summer. He'd hold it in his mouth, dig, dig, dig, stick it in the hole, poke it with his nose 4 or 5 times, then push dirt over it with his face, then poke the dirt with his nose until it was flat. He looked like he had some sort of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which it could be, and his face was full of dirt. I never laughed so hard in my life though. Watch my sister go dig it up and hand it to him again, or throw two at him at once, he'd scramble around like he lost his mind and go do it over again. LOL

That sounds like classic dog-burying-a-bone behavior to me!
When I was a kid, we had a bloodhound that was rarely in a place where he could bury a bone. He was a digger, so we had to pour concerete on his kennel floor. When we let him have a clean marrow bone in the house, he buried it under the couch cushions! It was hilarious to watch. However, a marrow bone is not terribly comfortable to sit on, even with a thick cushion for padding!
My first redbone had the full run of our yard. Whenever he buried a bone, he would come get me to show me where he was putting it! LOL I was very flattered that he wanted me to know where his treats were buried!
