Needing some advice an a young started hound...

Post by *PinkToes* »

I currently have 2 bluetick pups about 6 months to start with and i've showed them some coon but my female isnt too interested in it yet..I want to hunt coon and bear (i wish i can kill cats but where i live they dont allow it) Im a newbie at bear hunting but ive been huntin for about two years with friends and im addicted now! Can anyone give me some tips on starting my pups and helping with my female who isnt interested in hunting yet? Also im looking for a dog thats been started an seen a couple bear and can rig. I dont have much money cause im trying to buy my first tracking set and collars but free/cheap would be nice

If your friends will let you come along and bring your pups start them on coon. The female may need to just come along and figure it out. She is still young.

My advice is if u want to bear hunt then go for it but dont train them on coon. U will never know what u are going into if they run both.. Just from my experience

I think a live trap and a coon in a roll cage is just right up your alley. once you can get her to bark at the coon and then trail it and then pull hair, she will hunt whatever you channel her to. don't forget to put it in an enviroment where the coon will be noticed in a tree as well. the taist of blood lingers a long time on a young hounds tounge and that momentum will carry you as far as you let it!!!! also like these guys said a trained dog will cut your training time and b.s. in half so if you got buddies with good dogs keep letting her follow them and she will learn more than what you could teach her.
"Houndn'Ems Blueticks" if it smells like a cat, they'll catch it.

Go with your friends and get her to the tree as much as possible. My 6 month old stayed right by my side the first time I turned her loose when we were going to tree. This last weekend I turned her loose when she could hear the older dogs loud and clear and she took off and went right to the tree. She was still standing back watching because she is not too sure what she is supposed to do but she is learning.
