super glue on lacerations
super glue on lacerations
When it comes to using super glue on a good laceration do you all glue inside the wound or just the outside? The glue doesnt cause any kind of infection if it gets in there???

for the dogs or you? I have used it on me before and didn't have much luck. If you move much it just rips loose. Havn't tryed it on the dogs yet. As far as getting it in the wound, good luck not getting it in there.

on a the dog. Also wondering if i should still close it even though it has been a few days? I didnt notice it until yesterday evening and we were out a few days ago. Its probably 4 days old. I think she must have got into some barbed wire. The cut is about 3 inches long on the inside of her thigh. Totally through the skin but into the muscle i believe. She is acting completely normal and there doesnt appear to be any infection or swelling at all believe it or not. Looks like if its not closed though that she will always have a piece of skin hanging or something. I may take her the the vet in the morning but wanted to hear some feedback. Thanks!

Re: super glue on lacerations
give her a shot of penacilin and throw some blue coat on there and shel b just fine. Leave the wound open and let it drain, just keep an eye on it.
Re: super glue on lacerations
can i get my hands on this stuff at a local IFA or where is the quickest way toget some of these supplies?

Re: super glue on lacerations
You can get it at a feed store. there are spray cans and bottles with a dabber and i recomend the dabber one myself just so you know you get in there and get it all. The dabber one i believe is called blue lotion.
Re: super glue on lacerations
0ld wounds are always best left open. superglue shouldn't be used in new wounds if a vein is open either. glue the skin only if you use superglue. washing it with saline solution twice a day helps clear anything not supposed to be there. but like anything else with out seeing it it's all speculation. good luck hope it heals.

Re: super glue on lacerations
Most wounds that the dog is able to reach with the tounge will be kept clean and putting something on it like blue kote will just end up giving the dog a blue tounge. Just look it over good to make sure nothing is in there and its not infected and let nature take its course. Now if there is a flap of skin hanging you could toss a cuple of stiches on it, I have used dental floss in a pinch. If your dog trusts you enough to sit there while you stich it up... mine do times they even nod off during lol.
Today two of mine hit a barbed wire fence
And one almost lost an eye he has a big cut below the eye and also ripped the corner of his eyelid, was realy close... They never slowed down and treed the fox. Dogs are tuff and don't seem to feel pain the way we do...

Re: super glue on lacerations
i use gorrilla supper glue on all my dog wounds. first i sew them up then cake a thick layer of supper glue on top of the entire wound. if the dog is able to lick it reapply the glue daily so that he never takes it back down to the meat. the gorrilla supper glue works best because its thick.

Re: super glue on lacerations
Yeah it works, I glued a tear in my hounds leg about 3 weeks ago, 2" across and 3" high, right up into his armpit, missed his leg muscle but I could see up and "in" about 2"... he licked it open after a day and when re applying the second time I glued my bloody finger to the edge of the hole... he was screaming bloody murder as I was trying to get my finger unstuck
So DONT do that
I left a small hole as I was told to allow it to drain and wrapped it with gauze and put a cone on his head... which he ate 3 of to get at the wound!

Re: super glue on lacerations
stitching or glueing a wound over a day old is a waste of time unless you cut away the edges of the skin where the wound is. the skin has died and will not heal to itself til you cut down to living tissue. you could leave it or suture it sounds like. get some ace, lidocaine, staple gun, and suture kits from your vet for next time so you can get it handled one way or another a little quicker. Penn-G for cattle(pennicillian) about 5cc's every 2 days under the skin, start with one or two shots(4 days) and leave it be.

Re: super glue on lacerations
I agree with much of what larry said a wound over 6 or 8 hours old, you must trim the skin to get it to heal correct. I never had any luck with supper glue, only on small cuts it seem to work, and I would rather leave them open to heal right, they will keep it clean, clean it good with saline solution or one time peroxide, like larry said, penn G works good, in the muscle, 3 cc and under the skin 3cc, as the muscle is instant and good for 8 hours, and then the shot under the skin, is getting obsorbed, which gives another 8 hrs of coverage. Never close a wound completly, your asking for built up infection in the body, leave room to drain. In a pinch, a needle and fishing line works well, I prefer staples myself, strong, fast, and clean, and usually a dog wont mess with them. The only place, I wont doctor is the guts, if its through the wall, go to the vet.

Re: super glue on lacerations
Everyone here is right, leave a small drain hole if you choose to glue your dogs wounds, but I would rather not glue it. A dogs best defense for infection is his tounge, they carry antibodies in thier saliva that is one of the reasons a dog licks his sores. It does work well though, just the skin should be glued. I got some inside the wound of my thumb once and I swear there are still glue crystals in there and they smart if I hit them just right. Doctoring a dog or any animal is sometimes tricky, everyone has some idea of what works. Keep an eye on that dog and watch for infections. If he does not get more sensitive or swelled, it drains on its own, and starts to close, leave it. If anything else happens, give him a shot in butt of Penicillian watch it if it does not start to get better in a day or two take that dog to a vet. Good luck. SW

Works great.
However, never seal a wound shut! This would be easy to do with goo... So if you carefully "stitch" with the glue several points across a long cut it will be helpful.
And don't get glue IN the wound, it will make it worse, probably much worse.
Several of my friends have used the glue on themselves successfully, including on severe facial wounds (yeah, clumsy friends, not pugilists).
The idea is to use the glue to help your natural healing processes, not to be a substitute for them. Just because ya glue em back together does not mean they're good as new.

Re: super glue on lacerations
Thanks for all the advise. I checked the cut everyday and it looked so good and clean i decided not to touch it. It was probably 1 inch wide and 2 1/2 inches long. Three and a half weeks later it looked like it was sutured from the start! Im amazed how it healed. I thought for sure there was going to be a big flap of dead skin or something that would take a while to fall off but the cut looks great and there was never any swelling or infection. I got lucky i think but these dogs certainly have a much higher healing capacity then we do i think
