Ist Vote On Changes To The Npha Color Standards

Post by Dennis Fisher »

This is for the members of the Plott Breed that wish to be involved with this change to the color Standards of the NPHA. It's a matter of we the people of the Plott Breed address the issue or the UKC will. Whether you want a change or not, your vote is needed.

In 1978 the solid color for Plotts was eliminated from the Breed. In 1981 there was a vote taken by the membership of the NPHA that also passed. It stated that this issue was not to be brought up again. By the Bylaws of the NPHA, this is step one of bringing back, or not, the solid color Plotts. A vote must be taken of the membership of the NPHA to overturn this vote taken in 1981. A 2/3rds majority is needed to pass this so that WE people of the Plott Breed can take care of this issue. Whether you want solid colored Plotts back or not, the Plott Breed needs this passed so the UKC won't do has they see fit to address it.

The reason the UKC is demanding that this issue be addressed is quite simple, the genetics of brindling in our great Breed of dogs. There are at least two colors needed to make up a Brindled dog, a background color and the color of the brindling. Each color has it's own genetic makeup. Besides the make up of colors, brindling has it's own genetic make up over that of a solid color dog. Back in 1978 all there was to see if a dog was brindled or not was the human eye. All that has changed now with DNA testing. The issue is this; If the two colors needed to be brindle are similar or the same, the dog will appear solid to the human eye but be brindled in genetics. If the papers are pulled from a dog for being solid colored to the human eye, the owner of that said dog can now have it's genetics tested to show it has the genetic make up of a brindled dog. This opens many issues of legality, fairness and creditability for the Breed, the NPHA and the UKC.

This change to the NPHA Standards of the Plott Breeds color will be a two step process. In the early part of 2011 a Ballot will be sent out the the members of the NPHA to vote on to bringing this issue back up. To get a Ballot you MUST be a member of the NPHA. Dues MUST be paid on or before December 31st to receive a Ballot. Membership only costs $20 for single membership, $25 for family. To become a member go to the NPHA site, http://www.nationalplotthoundassociation.org/ . Fill out the membership form and send it to the address provided. If you value the Plott Breed and the Standards to which they conform, GET INVOLVED AND VOTE.

just my opinion & worth what you paid for it
i think it is stupid to ban a color that was there before the breed association existed.
it limits a gene pool, which as the show crowd has already shown is bad for the breeds overall health & function.
