Medical Question

I took the dogs out over the weekend and ran a bobcat. My one male dog ran the cat all day in 3 foot of snow. I lost him for two days and finally got him back late last night. The problem is that ever since I got him back his penis won't suck back into the sheath. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening or what I han do to fix it?

Frost bite maybe? ouch... sorry no idea but I think for that one I would get him to a vet. Most easy to fix cuts I do myself but thats one I would take to vet.

had this happen to a dog once. After it is exposed for a while it swells and will not retract normally. The vet should prescribe steriods to quickly reduce the swelling at least thats what cured my dog.

I also wonder what your dog was doing for two days 'cause i know what mine was doing and it sure wasn't chasing bobcats.

that was neutered badly and would have this problem. He would get giant persistent erections that wouldn't go down. It bothered the heck out of him and he would chew at it until it got really sore. He would not let my husband near the problem, but, if I got to him before he made a mess of it, I could pull the sheath and get it to retract. Don't know what causes it. If you can get him to fall asleep and leave it alone for a bit it will retract on its own. We used to give the dog a heavy dose of benadryl and let him sleep it off... :oops:

Thanks you all for the input. I actually went back in on it's own this afternoon. Whew. Hopefully it stays there. Dog Chaser, yeah I doubt he was chasing bobcats for two days. I was wondering if maybe he found a friend up there or something. :roll:

Just glad to have him back and now in decent health.

BGH, I had an old dog that had the problem consitantly. I think it was from dehydration. That might be what happened to your dog. I never went to the vet. Whenever it happened I just slipped the sheath back over myself. I felt a little funny doing it.... :roll:

but it had to be done.

Yeah. I ended up calling the vet and massaged it back in. That was a strange brokeback moment. :lol:

He is doing much better now. He has a slight infection but nothing a little penicillin won't cure.

Dehydration seemed to be the problem then running through the brush and snow cut him up a little bit.

My brother had a dog get tore up in the guts one time and got him fixed by the vet. Couple days later he had the same problem. I think it was 2 days and he went back to the vet. The vet said to put him down, it would never retract and it would keep getting infected. The dog was put down. This vet does not like bear hunters and always gives you a hard time when you take a dog to him. Another vet, later, told my brother that he could have just cut it off, if it came to that. I'm sure glad yours was an easy fix. My brother's situation was terrible. That dog should not have been put down (personally).
