Champaine Meat Diet.....

Is anyone else feeding the Champaine Sled Dog meat diet????

I was looking into feeding Mink Food to my dogs as not only a cheaper alternative to dry dog food, but also for healthier dogs. After talking to one of the mink farmers he suggested looking into the Sled Dog food.

The nutrition in these recipes is really something. One recipe has 31%beef, 31%chicken, and 21%liver for an amazing 83% meat. The remainder is a combination of bone meal for marrow, wheat germ oil and Corn or Canola oil (can't recall which). The second recipe I am trying is 62% beef, 21% liver, and 10% egg. Again it has the bone meal and oils.

My dogs are loving it. And their stool is small and compact.

I ask if anyone else is feeding it because I have question about how folks mite be feeding it, and how much. And how to handle it.... Frozen or thawed? I am new to this sort of thing, as I have always fed dry dog food. This stuff looks pretty good, and is not real spendy. I am paying about 45 cents a pound for the stuff, but can get it as cheap as 37 cents a pound if I want to handle it in 50 pound blocks as opposed to 10 pound bags.

When I was a kid we had a local mink farm and that is as good of food as it gets. We kept it froze, In WI that was free for six months out of the year I just used an ax and cut off a piece for each dog. Depends on the dog, and how much it was run, seems like about a cup and a half size, You maybe could use a band saw, to keep accurate portions.Wish i could still get it.

Where do you find this type of feed?

I usually supplement with raw meat, but vary the dry depending on whats on sale.

Fed 'em leftover stew once, and was kinda cute. one dog actually ate everything but the corn. Seriously.

It seems pretty inaccessible unless you're in a certain area. Unless they start offering to ship it I am going to have to stick with what I got.

I have tried feeding it frozen and the dogs love it, and it keeps em quiet ALL day while they naw on it.
This week, with tempatures near Zero, I have been letting a ten pound bag thaw out in the garage and feed it mixed with dry dog food. I just don't want the dogs having cold food in their belly while they are already trying to stay warm. Each dog is getting about 3/4 pound each feeding, and from what I have been reading about the stuff that is A LOT of calories for them when they need energy to stay warm.

Thank you cmogi10 for the link to the website. When I was looking into this food I was on the website and it has good reading. There are limited retailers. I imagine if a person was interested in being a retailer to supply dog owners in their area, it likely wouldn't be hard to get into.
I am buying mine from Northwest Farm Foods Co-op in Burlington, which isn't too far south of me. They are very helpful. They also have trucks going all over the west coast if a person was interested in trying to get a few cases.
The reading on the site goes into detail about dogs having better energy and stamina during "races". 1000 mile races. If its good for them, shouldn't be too bad for my pot lickers.
