Kennel floor dirt or gravel?
I finished my kennel setup a little while back. Right now it is just a dirt floor but I was thinking of putting gravel in it. I think it would be easier to clean and wont have to worry about those little mud puddles. So what would be better dirt or gravel? If gravel what type and how big? My kennel is set up with a turnout for all the dogs. I let them out to run together every morning. The only time they are in the kennel is at night and when I go out of town. Any ideas would be great thanks.

I laid concrete mesh and then 4" of road gravel on top and really like it.

Mine is on concrete, but I seen a guy use pea gravel, which is rounded rock with no dirt the size of lets say your pinky fingernail, the thing that stuck out, it sifted, the water through, or urine, and no mud.

We use red granite.....do get some mud puddles when it gets packed down but I like it cause it keeps the dogs nails short even in off season and its not as hard on the legs as hard concrete.

My Kennel and dog run are in the same area. Didn't want to pour that much concrete plus I heard it was hard on their joints. Almost went with pea gravel. Heard some stories about dogs eating the stones...don't know if that's true but in the end I opted for DG (decomposed granite). It packs down nice and doesn't track outside the kennel. Water drains through it with no puddles forming. Easy to scoop up the poop too.

I use washed 1/2 inch crushed gravel good for cleaning up their poop and urine goes right through, great in the summer time stick the sprinkler on it to dilute the urine smell, also toughens up their feet.

sand works pretty good as well, usually lot cheaper than gravel and no dust.

It's tough to clean up the poop, but rocks from the rail road bed will sure keep their feet in top condition.
