grawes lion scent does anyone use it

I tried starting some pups with grawes lion scent, I put one of my older dogs on it with the puppys,she has trailed and seen lots of lion, she smelled it and looked at me like I was crazy,so I tried it with another old lion dog and same thing he wouldnt trail it,Im just wondering if it is supposed to be lion scent why wont my good dogs trail it,I listened to some info on here from some certain guys (wont say who but everyone knows who im talking about now I think hes full of shit) does anyone know how to make scent from a lion for training pups

Not sure why your dogs won't run the grawes lion scent because not just I but several hundred others have reported to me that it has worked great for them. Send it back to Ardell and tell him he must have put coyote scent in that jar. LOL!

the scent in the jar smells like wet sawdust I have never smelled a lionthat smells like wet sawdust,and as far as coyote scent they already did that to me once had it replaced and now they send me this crap I guess I will have to make my own,I have talked to a lot of reallygood lion hunters and they all say it grawes scent doesnt work

Works for me but my mutts would chase anything! Actually, I'm not really sold on any of the animal scents because I don't think they are a real good example of what the animal really smells like to a dog. An animals scent is mosty from skin and hair molecules that fall from its body when it walks. Also from the bottom of its feet, I'm sure you get some scent. Most commercial animal scents are made up of urine or body parts, (not sure what Grawes uses) and so I just can't see how internal body parts would smell the same to a dog then the animals real scent. I guess the only argument could be that if a lion is actually walking along scent marking his territory by peeing on himself, then I could see where using urine might simulate an animals scent.

Nothing is better than the real thing but you will not be able to collect urine and make better lion scent than this. He uses the glands and when you trail a lion it is just not the pee they are smelling. I am sure many of you have nearly gagged at times when you get up close and have to muck it out with a bad old stinky tom, well he doesn't leave all of that along the way but he has some smell that is very different. If you gland scent smells like wet sawdust something is wrong with it because it should reek of cat.

Course like old Big N Blue said I ain't very good. LOL!

I am not going to go into a lot of detail and history behind our training, but I will tell you that if you train a young dog like Mr. Mike Leonard has outlined, you will have given that dog an excellent chance of becoming the best hound it could possibly be. Just one guys opinion, and it is worth exactly what you will pay for it..

Sure worked for me too. Did exactly as Mike put in his post and heck my one yr old pup will start and cold trail a bob all on his own. Don't know what else to say lol.

It worked for me. I used it to start 2 trigg pups. Worked good. My old dogs all ran it just like it was a lion track. I know what you are talking about though because I have tried other scents not from Grawes and my old dogs peed on it and walked away. Mikes method works. Their are plenty of people around to attest to it. It was the easiest, most gas saving method I found.

i have to apoligize to everyone who I offended,I talked to grawes and they said I got a bad batch of scent ,they are going to send me a new bottle so I guess my dogs were right

The first time I used it, I started at 100 yards and went to 500 yards in a square "C" path. I tamp a lion foot distance pattern and used the roller on the bushes. The roller would act as the side of lion body brushing against the bush. I came back twenty minutes later with my dogs and my best dog ran it all the way to the end. I was impress with the dog especially with a light wind blowing during the past twenty minutes. The dog weaved or snake pattern along the entire path. I keep the Grawes in the refrigerator to preserve its freshness.

I agree. this is one of the things that has always bothered me about laying scent drags. When I was starting my first pups I waisted alot of time and money messin with bottled piss and drags, in the end putting them on real game in real situations was what made them work.

No, I don't use the lion scent. I use the bobcat scent from Grawes. I do similar to what Mike recommends. My two older dogs that I have now as well as the two pups I have were and are all ran on Grawes. They all respond exactly the same as on a real track. The first real lion track my pups saw was a two day track and they took it and were gone. They were only ran on two Grawes tracks first and that was it.

I just cover the end of the legs with scent and cover it with a dishtowel. That way no scent actually hits the ground, just what slowly seeps through the cloth. I can run a track for a mile or so without messing with it. It spaces the scent about the same as a bobcat would normally walking. Every so often I will pick it up and cause the dogs to make a "loss" and then I'll drop it again and go on with the trail.
