Nocardia Bacteria?

Post by valleyhound »

Any body ever delt with Nocardia bacterial infection? My old dog has had it for a year and a half now and niether me nor my vet knows how to get rid of it. It is an absess on his side behind the rib cage up by his back that oozes bloody pus all the time. doesn't seem to bother him much he still runs fine but I would like to get rid of it. Been trying different doses of antibiotics over this time period but don't want to go to strong and fry his liver. Any suggestions?

Researching this illness is your best bet, if you`ve not done so already. Learn as much as you can about it, and then you will be able to participate in your dog`s treatment along with your vet`s help as opposed to taking a passive roll with his treatment.
If your dog does not pull through, at least you know that you have tried your best to help. Hopefully, the diagnosis is correct, and the treatment matches the illness.

Perhaps the abcess needs to be drained with long term and low dose administration of appropriate antibiotics?, and to ensure the infection has not spread to other organ systems too.

It sounds like a nasty illness to get. Could the dog be getting re-infected from contaminated soil?? Bedding?

Hope this points you in a direction of help.
