Yotes

Post by easttenngator »

I have a question after seeing those pics of those big yotes tracks,

Do you all have Coydogs and could that be one of there tracks?? Not sure if everyone calls them the same thing or not...... Coydog is when a Yote and a pet or wild dog breed together.

There pups are not as smart as a yote but are alot bigger and was wondering if anyone has run one and how did your dogs do ....do the coydogs run harder or fight better than a yote??

thanks in advance

coydogs are mostly myth. under NORMAL circumstances dogs, coyotes & wolves will attempt to eradicate each other. normally it takes human intervention to cross breed them. i read in trapper & predator caller a couple of decades (maybe just less than 20 years but around that) ago about a study on the northeastern coyotes. because of allegations of mixing, just over 600 (604 if i remember correctly) coyotes from PA, NY & new england were tested for DNA evidence of wolf or dog ancestry. only 5 samples showed POSSIBLE dog ancestry & 1 showed POSSIBLE wolf ancestry. also the possibly impure coyotes were NOT the largest specimens in the study. the largest specimens were absolutely pure.
canines are shaped by prey base & predator concentrations. eastern coyotes that feed primarily on deer grow to the same size as the red wolves 35-70#, although i believe i saw photos of an eastern coyote that was over 80#. also because in most parts of the east they have no wolves preying on them they don't need to be small enough to go to ground. in areas w/ wolves they switch back to smaller prey because the longer chases on deer attract wolves and the bigger yotes get killed off quickly by wolves. the same hold true for the relationship between red fox & coyotes.

ok POPS you did your homework and that was great reading, wish I knew that earlier in life I hunted yotes in Fla without aid of hounds sitting on fire breaks for them to run or walk there trails in the morning hours and shoot them as so as we saw them most of them that we killed were small yotes as all land mammals in fla seem to be smaller( weak soil ,hieght of palmatteos, swamps) and never saw these coydogs deep in the woods, but we did see some on a golf course that was newly opened in a part that was all woods just 3 years before and on a buddies of ours ranch that had a new housing delevpoment put on 2 side of the ranch, we got the name from a Range Officer who we called to show off one of them that he had killed(Range Officer works for the Sheriffs Dept deals only in animals and animal law, not a Game Warden) and he told us that they would breed out in a couple of gens..they are to dumb to breed at the right time of year and not enough wild smarts
