Training Help

I bought two bluetick coonhounds a while back that we are trying to train on mountain lions they are about 2 now. They follow the trail fairly well but stick really close to us and we can't get them to run out further ahead of us. We have been really close a couple of times and they will be on a hot trail then drop it to come and "check in" with us. How can I get them to stop? Also I am buying myself a nice majestic pup and I welcome any advice to starting a new puppy in the sport. My husband works a lot so these are my babies and its my job to get these hounds ready to go. Going out with a buddy to hunt lions with his trained dogs.. hopefully it will help our blues figure it out. Wish us luck.

We are headed out to Montrose to hunt with a buddy and an outfitter he works with. Get our pups out with some experienced ones... but does anyone have any suggestions to help me with getting these dogs off our heels when we are hunting if the hunt this weekend doesnt help it click in their heads?

Did those blues come from coon bloodlines? Sounds alot like they do. But with bobcats we walk them on the track until they are worked up then let them go, if they make a lost we circle the area til we find the exit. You may have to go a few miles with them the first few times. I'm not sure how lions are but I'm going off of what I know about bobs.

Yeah they do, oh and sorry they are one. I don't know why I thought two.. Thanks for the post though, Ive heard that bobcats are a little harder than lions but its all basically the same thing I guess. Maybe well try your idea though and see if we can get them going. Hopefully runnin' with these trained dogs help!
