Moving
I am getting ready to move to ND. I was wondering what I could run a pack of hounds on out there? I was also wondering if there is any kind of Hog pop. out there?

Re: Moving
A lot depends on where in ND--- pretty big state.
you will dang sure have to make some adjustments to how you keep the hounds.. Good insulated houses are a must.. you can see lots of snow and WIND.
I know of one fellow who went from here in KS to Minot and took a good female up with him.. the blizzard was a bit much for her.. snow up to your buckle and the wind packed snow in around her and he lost her...
But you provide for the conditions and there is sure some good coonhunting there... hogs??
I am not aware of any...

Ive been working over in the whilliston for 3 years and brought my dogs with me the first year. i had to bring 2 of them home cause the temp was too extreme for them. I know there's a lot of coon hunting, no hogs and the lion population is perty low. Theirs a lot of private property and its hard to get permission and the local houndsman perty much have all the access.

Re: Moving
It's been a long time but I ran hounds in North Dakota for a long time. Get them there early and have them go into the winter gradual and like everybody said really good houses and I even built my houses into the garage and had a little heater in there when it got really bad. Expect the coon season to be short usually September, October, and by Thanksgiving it is freezing so hard the coons hole up. they will come out some if you get a chinook and the nights stay above 28 degrees for a bit. You are not far from the badlands and the national grassland and you can run bobcat there and also up on the Missouri and it's only a short ways to Sidney and you can get a Montana permit and run the Yellowstone. Watford, Killdeer, and Little Missouri area out of the park also have some good running on bobcat if you can get around. Dang cold place though and lots of times in the winter it is just too cold to put them hound down. when it gets 15-45- below zero just stay home or travel south for some hunting.
The only hogs you will find up there are at old McDonald's farm or the local Wal-Mart. LOL!
My oldest son lives in Sidney but his office is in Williston.
SHE IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART PARTNER!!
Good luck!

Damn, I just read this post and got goosebumps just remembering the winters anywhere along what is called the high line, Been over 20yrs since I hunted that country, but I gotta say it left a lasting impression, I didn't run hounds at the time just a trap line and called, but I did work outside for a living and gotta say you will see the kind of cold that most folks cant imagine.
The northern lights are beautiful to behold, as are what the local tribes call the sun dogs, when you see the sun dogs crossing the prairie you will know its way past cold and has passed into deadly, beautiful but deadly, The trees will be bent in the direction of the prevailing winds in a permanent lean of submission.
You will find various critters frozen in place in a hay stack in a futile attempt to escape the cold, Black toes and the water blisters from frostbite will become common to you,
I could go on but you get the drift, Not a bad place if you have the right mindset but its a world apart from Florida in a way that some people aren't ready for, good luck to you. there is money to be made but it comes with a price as do all things, as Mike said its not for the faint of heart.
matter of fact I'm 1/2 tempted to fire up the wood stove right now just remembering!!
Take care Ken

Re: Moving
I am supposed to be moving to Cooperstown. I was thinking about running coyotes with hounds. I am in MI right now the southern end but know a little bit about the cold. I have lived in FL off and on since I was 16 now 26. We were talking about FL or ND. ND is where the job came up at.
