Dog Transport Costs

Post by zachvu »

What is a general cost to transport pups? Is it usually done by a transport company or just by other houndsmen travelling? Curious to see what kind of prices everyone's looking at...

Typically if you aren't in a hurry to get the dog, waiting for someone that is headed your way is usually cheaper. Alot of the transport companies have to charge you more cause that is their source of income. I know I had two dogs hauled from Az to Wa and it cost 300 total. When he hauled them back from WA I had 4 dogs hauled and he only charged 400 since I was a returning customer. I have been quoted by some haulers at .5 a mile. I can drive it myself for cheaper than that. I just recently had a pup brought up from Az and a gal who was heading to WA brought her half way to me and it was 140. So I guess there isn't going to be a baseline for price it will just depend on when, where, and how fast you want it done.

On the other end of the spectrum, I had an 11mo old dog hauled out here from Tenessee and it cost $450...took 19 days...set her back 6 months... and I will never do it again.

You guys also might want to check out USHIP. I used them back when I was making dog boxes and it was really a cheap way to go. I talked to one guy that hauled a box for me and he had my dog box, a horse, 3 dogs the mosr stuff they got going the cheaper it is he said something about them dogs running $50 to ship them he had picked them up around Or. and was taking them to southern Cal. and 1 to AZ. Its worth the look.

For pups at least shipping by air is not bad at all and they only travel a few days 3 at most. Got a pup from PA to AZ his travel time was a bit less than 24 hours. Cost was $160 + $50 for a crate and vet checkup. I had to drive 180 round trip to pick him up at the airport.

For some reason alot of people don't seem to be willing to ship by air though... Maybe its abit more of a hassle for the breeder on his end than the buyer? You do have to get them cheaked by a vet and buy a crate to ship in. Then likly drive a bit to the airport ...

Keep in mind this was 3 years ago but I just looked up the E-mails and The pup was shipped on Delta. Breeder said it would cost me 199.65 and it arrived on a USwest flight and I payed 130.02. My memory sucks or maybe I was figuring in the cost to fill the tank with gas... ;)

Yep I use to haul dogs for people did it for a little while don't know how they make a living at it would charge any where from 100-350 depending on what they wanted would pick one up off of uship for gas money if it was on my route had a good customer base but uship would be the best way to go if you are on a tight budget and you can look at what people that had dogs hauled said about different haulers
