They can save you a lot of time and a lot of steps, I think they are well worth it.

As Bill says, they can save you a lot of time and elevation is displayed well in them, besides more roads information.
Buddy made me one for Texas and New Mexico that I am real pleased with and it was a snap to put in and use.

Well worth the money! I bough the topo map for the entire US in case I travel. I use it mostly b/c it shows small roads and creeks that the GPS unti would not show without it. It is nice to tell what side of the road or creek your dogs are on. If you spend money on the unit and collars, go ahead and spend the xtra 100 on the map.
