Was wondering if anyone had bought a 2 meter antenna for a truck like you use with the Icom mobile and marine radios to use with their Garmin. A friend of mine was going to try this but I havent talked to him in a while to see how it was working for him. Im sure Radioshack as an adapter that will fit the Garmin to the big antenna. So was wondering if anyone has tried this or uses this. If so did it give a range increase?

Re: Garmin Antenna Idea
I've got some qoutes out there for having some Longer antennas cut and built for the Garmin. Or me getting the parts to do this myself... (I just need the time!) But You have the right idea you can build an antenna for 156Mhz and probably see some increase if you build a good antenna, I'm not sure that it's going to be a Drastic Change, but I've heard good things from folks that have had some Built.

I've also heard (I think on coondawgs?) of someone taking a truck mount antenna, cutting off the base, and putting it into a piece of pvc in the pack to protect it. If I remember correctly he said it worked better and was a lot more durable than the folding, duck, or any of the other manufactured ones

I use a truck mount antenna for my garmin. It does increase the range by double.

Yeah Im thinking about buying one that mounts to the truck. Going to Radioshack and getting the correct adapter. Than when in the truck I can just hook the Garmin up to that antenna. With our training season coming up might look into this setup to try it out and post my results to see if there is any change.
