THE DIFF BETWEEN WESTERN BOBCAT AND THE EASTERN CAT

Post by stonesthrowkennel »

Well i bet your write about the difference betweem arkansas and montana but i will definently say that there is not a state in this country any harder to catch lets say kill than a new york bobcat. Most of the time it is just another day to listen to the dogs work on tract. Most bobcat hunters here in the east only last for a couple months then give up so iam sure its not much diff then where your from. My hole point was back to my post that it really comes down to where you are hunting. When i first chased western cats boy i was very happy we where treeing bobcats. Then i said only if we could do this back east. Well did not mean to intrude in your conversation but love to bobcat hunt. I would be the first one to say go hunt the eastern bobcats and then tell me what you think. And iam sure your cats are different then the north east and western cats. Thank you

we hunt in the UP of michigan. hell of country all around. it seems like the big cats like to stay put on the ground and fight them dogs all day. what makes it hard up here is the mixed terrain. we have thick heavy cedar swamps, sometimes almost impossible to walk though when the snow gets deep. mixed marshlands that will stay wet year round. you need a pretty decent dog to keep its nose right to keep on the cat track. running around all the coyote and deer trails will test there skills. i only hunted here and im still very new to the sport but its not the easiest things to hunt here, but by far the funnest. you can spend a good part of the day just looking in blow downs and root ups for them cats. its a wake up when you peek in and something peeks back at you.

I hunt coos county in western oregon. Its very brushy in most places. Treeing cats seems easy if you have the right dog or dogs in your pack, without the right dog a guy starts to wonder how a cat ever got tree'd. Thankyou, John.

I hunt the Oregon coast.Cascade mountains, eastern Oregon and California desert with the same dogs, some of the dogs do better in different conditions. Some of the areas[ desert or lodge pole pumice] are hard to tree a cat in in the dry season unless you get them on the first jump. If the cat gets ahead and keeps moving it is pretty hard for a dog to get back up to them. In the warm dry season my catch average goes way down but when the rains come they start looking real good. I feel a key to top cat dogs is hunting them threw the dry season, they learn to carry a track at that time. For me that means some travel time to areas open to training. Dewey
