Re: dose anyone bear hunt with mutts??
I have hunted alot with mutts.
Buffy 1/2 bordercollie german shepard and golden lab, dame to Burger and Cookie whose sir is a black and tan. Burger and cookie treed their 20th bear alone on there first birthday and went on to catch a pile. Burger died this year at the hands of a lion but Cookie is still going strong as one of my lead dogs.

That is awesome chilcottin, did they tree 20 by themselves or did they tree the 20th one by there selves? either way that is good stuff. I like to see different stuff like that. Seems those types of dogs ar ealot smarter than most hounds and a little more eager to please, possibly making it easier to train/hunt them and trash breaking is probably alot easier. If you could tell us a little more about them and how they hunt handle strong points and weak points i would appreciate it. Thanks DC.

DC the 20 bears where started and finished by those two dogs. Cookie turned three this July and has been under 200ish lions lynx and bears. Neither dog ever saw a leash and trash races where very rare, If you wanted you could leave them on the porch and never worry about going hunting, they know when to turn it on and off.
Both dogs run a track with there head up making the trail hounds look bad. Often I will give my only trail type hound a head start of 5 minutes on a hot lion track and Burger and Cookie would have that cat treed before he hits the spot where they jumped the cat. I really got sick of seeing these trail hounds 1/2 mile or more behind the fast dogs.
I have a grade walker that learned under Cookie and Burger who you would swear was a cur as well. She runs just the same and is all grit. I hope to find a suitable replacement for Burger with a Leopard Cur the year. i will keep you posted.

Re: dose anyone bear hunt with mutts??
Burger and Cookie have just as good of nose as most hounds as Burger would out strike any hound I had on the box, he also would cold trail a melted out lion track a little faster then my Black and tan. Cookie has spent more time running hotter tracks and never had the oportunity to develope her cold trailing. On the box rigging she doesn't mis a bear track very often.
I am firm believer that cold nose hounds are more developed then born with. If you spend alot of time cold trailing your dogs tend to take up that trait. If you are running hot tracks most of the time the dogs will eventually suck on coldtrailing. In My country you would be a fool to want a cold nose track straddling hound as there are few roads, lots of wolves and lots of good game.

My dad had a little Mcnabb, aussie shepard, bull terrier dog that was great on bear. One of the best bay dogs you could ask for. He was way faster than the hounds and would only bay from infront of a bear. We were able to get a lot of them "walkin bears" because Shotgun would get them stopped by getting in front. He was real quick and agile too so he got in and got a bite and got back out before the bear got him. He was silent on trail though, so if you heard shotgun, you knew the bear was bayed solid or tree immediately.

Re: dose anyone bear hunt with mutts??
Guess I should have joined this thread when I started one about a sight hound/coon hound cross, didn't go so well for me. So what do you think makes your mutt dogs do so well on bear? I'm willing to play "mad-scientist" to come up with some fast dogs. I hunt bear, lion and bobcat with an occaisonal coon. Like to try to start my own line of fast dogs that will put game up, don't really care what breed, just want fast. I like the slender longer legged type for endurance.
My redbone is long legged but hes still learning how to catch bear, unfortuately I didn't learn much about hunting until about 2 years ago, and he was already 3. He seems to still be learning and I have made some major changes in how I deal with my dogs. The pup out of him was long legged and slender, bout 45 lbs (redboneXenglish). Not my pup (~2yo) though, I have a stud but I want to get a bitch in the next year to make some pups.

Re: dose anyone bear hunt with mutts??
You need to go to florida get the fastest grayhound or whippet you can find get a american pitbull terrier maybe old family rednose or colby. breed them get a pup out of them find the best treeing fiest squirrel dog breed it then get a pup out of it and breed it back to another whippet and theres your dog. LOL just kidding we dont need no more different lines to argue about.LMAO
