Got there Sat. morning, checked in, got liscenses, & headed for our cabin to drop our gear & unload dogs. Loaded a few dogs up & we took off looking for bear sign. Was not long we dumped on a track & had out first bear treed. We let it down & re ran it & the bear stayed on the ground for a few bay ups & then treed again. A good friend Jon harvested his first bear weighing 138# dressed. This bear also put a few holes in our dogs.
I should have kept a log of this because they all run together. One place we turned all young dogs loose & my Idaho Spud dog(got from Chris Leyden) split off & treed a yrlg. bear. We let that one go. Another track Andy turned 4 young dogs loose & they made some big loops & treed a sow with a cub & a boar up the same tree. We harvested the boar weighing 160# dressed.
Found a really good track on our bait, only problem they had about 4 bear that came into it. We found where it left & Andy put ole Trapper (12 yrs. old) on it hoping he would stay on the bigger track. He trailed out & about 45 minutes we heard him jump the bear. It took us about a hour & 1/2 & we got the posse into him. This bear would bay & run. Andy got in there close a couple of times & he would break. I got in within 12 ft. but did not have a shot. Finally the bear turned & saw me & ran right up a tree. Dogs did outstanding & had quite a few holes in them but they all stayed with it. This bear stayed on the ground for about 5 hours. A guy named Mike from Wisc. harvested this bear with it weighing 268# dressed.
Ran another bear & treed & we thought was a boar but ended up being a 195# sow dressed. Mark harvested this one.
Treed another that only ran for about 1/2 a hour & we harvested that one too.
Also got outrun one day. Another afternoon we started a bear around 6:00 pm & finally caught the dogs off a little after dark.
I forgot my camera. Jon had his but no memory card. Mike brought his but kept forgetting to bring it along. Oh well, that is the way it goes sometimes.
