How many dogs do you need to hunt BOBCATs

If your just in it for the catch, One dog will do; but if you like "Good Music" get you a few. Personally I like a four dog pack.

Depends on how much experience you and your hounds have.And how much time your able to put into it.The less experience and time you and your dogs have you are better off with fewer dogs.One or two is plenty.You will catch more game with less dogs.The more experince and time you and your dogs have the more dogs you can get away running and working together as a pack you will catch more game.There are guys on here turning 10 pluss dogs loose and catching almost every cat they jump and there are guys on here with 2 or three dogs doing the same.Either way takes alot of time and work to get your dogs to that point.Good Luck Larry

Hey sdtough, don't know where your going to be hunting in SD, but in the hills we have best luck with 1 but do catch them with 2. 1 good dog will catch you way more cats then pack of average dogs.

How many dogs does it take to catch bobcats is the question? Down south it consistantly I believe it will take more dogs than one or two dogs to catch down here in the south. I have also learned to never say never! These cats down here run in such thick ruff territory it takes realentless pressure I hope my spelling is correct on that but these cats run hard in this ruff . I read about people catching cat with treeing dogs of all kinds and I would like to know if those same hounds that you can catch cats up north with one or two dogs could catch cats down here. That would really be nice to know. Every cat hunter down here that I know of hunts with running walkers. I have asked some of them have they ever tryied treeing type hounds and they say tree breeds cant put the pressure on the cat to make him tree or be caught on the ground. Do not take this that I am putting down treedogs because I have never tried cat hunting in Alabama with treebreeds. But I do think the territory makes a difference!

Take it from someone that for years tried to build a pack of cat dogs that could catch consistently with tree bred hounds in the south. It is almost impossible. In the late 70's
I bought a great start dog on bobcat. My hunting budy at the time said if you get a staight start dog on bocat i will funish the rest of the pack as he had access to many hounds. well after going thru about a hundred hound and almost wearing out poor old Rambler with one dog races. The man that I bought him from felt pitty on me as he had warned me that one dog could not catch a cat in this country and that tree bred hounds would not be able to run with Rambler. He called me and said he had a man that would double my money on Rambler if I wanted to sell him. That was alot of money as I had paid $5000.00 for him. I said I really appreciate it but I am going to have a cat pack no matter what. He said come to my house this week end. I did and he gave me 7 hounds to go with Rambler. What a difference it made!Some of the hounds he gave me came from Mr. Finney Clay. Speck was a great houd. In the south piney woods you definitly need a pack of running dogs. Cost me many thousands of dollars to learn that lesson. Take it or leave it. Just my personal experience.

In my grate home state of UT i have found best. 2 or 3 really good hounds will do the job with out a flaw but that is in UT. Good luck

Just interested to know why down south more dogs is better? I hunt cats in northern wisconsin, in some real nasty country, and your a lot more effective with one or two GOOD dogs then a bunch, the reason up here is those cats are doubling back on the track and walkin on blowdown for a long time before they hit the ground and having more than one or two dogs is just a mess with dogs overrunning the track.

This is just my guess since I've never hunted southern bobcats or elsewhere besides the Upper Midwest. First I think they have a bunch more cats, so they want to put the hurt on them as quick as possible. Since most hunting is done without snow, the cat they are starting likely isn't as far away as what we experience. I don't think in tough dry conditions a dog can take as old of of track we can, but that is just my guess. I think it would be darn tough to get a full pack of dogs to stick together and be in the right spot on a long tough cold track. I'd bet most of their races are wrapped up by the times ours are just starting to warm up. I bet they would put the heat on the cat when they did jump him though, but getting them all there would be the trick. This is all just speculation though.

Just think how long it would take in WI to either road hounds to a cat track OR find one the dogs rig. Once in awhile it would be quick but other times it would be days.
