First Bear

Post by Hounder- »

Figured I'd share a picture and a quick story of my first bear.

Nothing too special, wasn't a monster, dressed out at 260# but the hunt was everything I wanted.

My two young dogs, Juice and Flow, cold tracked it and ran it for awhile then started walking with it. My cousin and I got a few more dogs (Huck, Misty, Gater, and Bolt) in there and then it was a walking/catching battle for another hour. I took off with my gun into the woods; kept up with the dogs but didn't get a shot til about an hour later. Dogs had him bayed up against a blow down, all the dogs were doing great about 3 feet in front of him. Shot him in the neck and down he went, 10.4 mile run according to the GPS. I was on cloud nine for the rest of the season.

All dogs did well, had a fun cold track (my favorite part) and there is nothing more intense than shooting a caught bear. Had a good rat pack of dogs in there too, 2 of mine, 3 of my cousin's and 1 of my uncle's, 3 walkers, 1 redbone, and 2 plotts. Variety is the spice of life  !

Like I said, no monster, it was a younger boar, bigger frame just hadn't put on the fat.

My cousin also got his first bear in an almost identical hunt this year too, so was a very fun and rewarding season for us.

Just thought I'd share, thanks for reading.

Start dogs with the bear, Juice and Flow. Like I said other dogs on the bear too, all did well.
