Q - hunting with female in heat
Q - hunting with female in heat
Hey all, we are finally getting the snow weve been waiting for and my female is in heat. I hunt with two uncut males and the female.
I couldnt find a track today but when i let them out i wondered if they would rather sniff tail than hunt a lion if i did find one.
What do you guys do, do you leave the female at home? Shes important for the hunt. also i first notice her in heat last friday, 7 days ago.
hoping for some advice.

Thats a recipe for disaster. Your two uncut males WILL fight over her and you will end up with puppies. Leave her in her kennel as far away from the two males as you can.

male and female equals puppies male+male+female equals fights, puppies, and domination issues from now on, whether she's in heat or not. If you have no breeding program planed you should get them all fixed. Saves on feed and problems with having to leave anyone home.

Cut the males too you will have better hunters and they will live longer.
Everybody thinks they are going to breed someday and raise more of old Partner to carry on. Unless you are really set up for it and have a planned and proven breeding program you are better off to just go hunting and if you need a replacement pup they are not hard to find. Dogs that have been hunted steady and hard those are the ones that are hard to find.

If I were you I wouldnt spade her during cat season she will be out of heat befor you know it and you can keep hunting her then get her spade in the off season. You can also hunt her by herself and she will do just fine. Andy

A female in heat will hunt, males will hunt her. your best bet is to leave her in the kennel, or cut your males. If her heat cycle started 7 days ago, you have 14 more days of it. bitch dogs have a week coming in, a week of full blown, and a week of coming out.

Hormones play a role in physical performance. It is something to consider if you want or need your dogs to have the best possible physical abilities especially when it comes to males.
Re: Q - hunting with female in heat
If you get her fixed Monday, you still shouldn't hunt her for a week or two and most vets charge more to fix a female who's in heat because of the extra blood and extra work. I suggest letting her finish her heat, give her a bath at about the 20 day mark using a little peroxide on her female parts and rinsing well. Then in the off season get her fixed.
Re: Q - hunting with female in heat
due to good advice here i left the female home today and went out and treed a nice cat with the two males. thanks guys.
