Sportsmen's group to help hunters kill black bears

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A sportsmen's group hopes to help hundreds of hunters kill as many black bears as possible in a game unit west of Anchorage.

The Alaska chapter of Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife hopes to rotate hunters through about a dozen camps and baiting stations in Game Management Unit 16B. The group formed an Alaska chapter last year.

State biologists estimate the game unit has only about two moose for every black bear in the game unit.

Area biologist Tony Kavalok says the Alaska Department of Fish and Game hopes to reduce the black bear population by roughly 60%, or to about 760 bears.

There are roughly 1,900 black bears in the game unit now.
