Big bunch on my dogs chin

Post by Jason Waterhouse »

My dog just developed a huge bunch on his chin.Doesnt seem to affect his eating or Mood he seems very upbeat. I took a new needle and poked it to see if it was full of fluid I was going to drain it out.But doesnt seem to be full of fluid. I put him on some antibiodics. Anybody no what would of caused this or what exactly it is.

Hi Jason, I've had similar things on dogs in the past. Once I lanced one and got nothing out only to have it completely empty out a few days later just from entering a plastic syringe (after hot compresses). Some guys up here have found that hay for bedding will cause these lumps when some sharp piece will will work in from the mouth. Also coon bites and dirt from the past. JMO, Terry

could be a porccupine quill, just a thought, but I could see a splinter doing the same thing. I had a dog get a quill in her that did not show for weeks, and then do that.

Jason i would say that it is an infection from some thing in there. if it was me i would not put him on antibiotics in less it got to bad it will swell and end up draining on its own then flush it out. than put him on antibiotics.if you wont to lance it feel al around it and you will find a soft spot on it. it will be as big as the end of your small finger may be a little bigger that is were you make the cut. just make sure that you flush it out.

One of our dogs had two or three of these and when every he would get them we would try and drain and the penicillin him up and it would go away. We figured it was cheat grass or something that worked its way in.

If you bed your dog with barley straw, that maybe the cause. penicillian will usually take care of it. Barley straw gets in their mouth and it acts like a quill. it usually breaks through the outside.

That could be a salivary mucocele. The treatment would be a surgical removal of the mandibular and sublingual salivary glands. Could also be an abcess of some kind from some foreign body. Probably should get it aspirated with a needle and syringe. If it has a saliva like consisitency to the fluid you get out of it it is a mucocele and would need a surgical excision of those glands to keep it from coming back.

Also you might want to do a thorough oral exam and see if there are any swellings under or around the tongue. There are some other possibilities of masses in that area. Does the dog show any pain on manipulation of the mass? Does it seem freeley moveable and fluctuant? Any other history?
