Identification Chip Side Effects?????

Have you ran into any side effects with chipping your dogs ? And did you chip them yourself or did you have it done ?

Never any side affects. I've done at least twenty dogs over the years. It's around 15-25 dollars to have it done around here.

I've never seen any side affects. All my dogs are chipped and I do it myself. I chip every dog or pup that comes on my place, and chip all the pups from my litters before they are sold. I buy them in "pre-paid registration" boxes of 5, 10, or 25 (depending on how many I need) relatively cheap from the manufacturer. Cost is about $19.50 a dog and thats with the registration. I do all my pups just incase they get lost, stolen, or dumped in a shelter later on in life. I believe a breeder has an obligation to any dog/pup they bring into this world for its life.

I see there is more then one company making them are they all the same ? or is one better? if I do it I was going to buy them off the internet and do them myself to save on cost

Dont' get caught up in the yearly registration BS some companies are pushing on people, it isn't needed. Once that chip is in, it will always work no matter who is checking it. All the information is loaded into one nationwide data base, it doesn't matter who you buy them from. Just make sure they get registered when you get the dog chipped.
Chips are probably your best hope of recovering a dog if it is lost or stolen. Eventually, a vet or Animal Control will check that dog and if it comes up lost or stolen, you'll be getting a call. If someone steals your dog and it is chipped, it is impossible for the theif to re-register it under his name because he doesn't have the original number.
Pretty good insurance for $20.

I just stumbled on this thread.

So - I buy the kit (found a 5 pack for $40), put the chip in, register the number at $20 per chip, and its all done?

One thing I did see was the different frequencies. Is the 125 more common, as that was pre-checked on all the products I looked at.

HomeAgain chips are expensive and they want you to do the "yearly registration" BS that Dean is talking about. I think AVID might also, AVID is probably the oldest most commonly used and easily read by scanners. I origionally had some of my older dogs done with HomeAgain, but have since switched to the AKC CAR chips.

I like the RESQ and AKC chips as far as cheap, easy, and effectiveness goes.

I use HomeAgain chips, the yearly fee is only if you want to sign up for health insurance/lost pet help, you get that free for one year then they will keep trying to sell it to you BUT the dog is permanently recorded with them and they will still contact you should the dog be picked up, that service is good for the life of the dog with the chip.
I can get them for about $10 to $14 a piece through either Revival or Lambert Vet - just depends on who's cheaper or having a sale at the moment. I do them my self, one thing to do is shave the injection site to bare skin then do a quick disinfection of the site, pinch the skin tight while withdrawing and a minute or two after taking the needle out. They are big needles and you can really shove some hair and dirt in or break the microchip (and also can on occasion get some bleeders) especially if you dont clean the site a little.
