Heat Stroke ?

Post by sherlock14 »

We went hunting last Friday night , weather was damp and foggy on the mountain tops where we turned loose temp's were in the 60's maybe low 70. When I found my one dog he was way behind and probably only ran a couple miles . I was on the other side of the river from him and called him off. When I got to him he was laying in the river only thing sticking out was his head. Mind you he's a big dog around 90+ plus lbs., still over weight. Had to wade the river and get him. once across the river he walked to the truck which was 200 yards up the road. I took him home and had to carry him to his box, he wouldn't move at all . Next morning went and checked on him and he came out of his box and met me. I personally thought he'd be dead. All day long Saturday it seemed like he couldn't get enough water, I'd say he drank gallons. At the same time he was having very bad diarrhea, it looked like old black motor oil. Anyway to make a long story short ,he's buried beside his mom and grandmother. What don't make sense is we ran bear in alot hotter weather than this and he's been there .What do you all think ?

I would guess the black stool is from bleeding above the stomach.

Could he have fallen and taken internal injury.

There was some ledges in there but who knows. 2 other dogs in our group was all most as bad . I know 1 laid around all day Sat. and the other one the guy said Sun he might take her to the vet. I don't know if they all got over heated . The other 2 dogs ran a lot farther than mine did ,but they were alot smaller dogs. the other 2 dogs ran the bear to the river and stopped . and were also found laying in the water cooling off and could hardly move. It just its hard to believe the dogs could get so overheated in weather so damp and foggy.

The black stool is usually from internal bleeding. If above the stomach the digestion process turns it black.

deff heat stroke.....

I'm assuming if it was foggy that means it was damp/muggy and one of the biggest factors of heat stroke is humidity....Had a dog last week get heat stroke on a cool 68 degree morn but it was humid/muggy.

I gave the dog a little bit of honey to perk him up, let him lay in a cool (not ice cold) creek, and gave him water throughout the day (apparently if you give a dog too much at one time they just throw it up and become even more dehydrated)

I've also had dogs get heat stroke that I just couldn't treat and ended up having to take them to the vet and get fluids IV'd into them.....

A man is not very smart that can,t find his wife 2 jobs.
And any wife should be able to support her man and a pack of hounds.

Never shock your dog off bad game
untill he knows what good game is.

I had 2 hounds dig out of pen on a hot night last month
& caught a mean varmit & I guess fought him all night in the heat,
One dog died the next day & the other died about a week later.
So it can happen even at night.
