safe antibiotics for pregnant female?

Post by newby »

So, just bred my female last week, not sure if it took yet or not, but she came down with an abcessed anal gland so they aspirated it and put a drain tube in. I told the doc on multiple occasions that she may be pregnant and needed them to make sure the meds they were going to give her were safe in case she was pregnant. Is cephalexin safe for a pregnant female? The doc said it was the only one that didn't expressly say, "not safe for pregnant females", so it must be safe...not a whole lot of confidence in that answer, what are you guys' experiences and opinions? Thanks, Darin

Darin no antibiotics are 100% safe in pregnant dogs but the vet should know whats best for the treatment of your dog. I have given amoxicillin and cephalexin to pregnant females. Andy

cephalexin would be what I would use. I have used it before on bred females and nursing females with no problem. As Twist said any drug can cause a reaction. Dewey

Thanks guys, appreciate the input. I'll just give the cephalexin a shot and hope for the best.
