NEAT BAYUP

Post by al baldwin »

Neatest bayup I ever witnessed, occured on winter morning. Had ran a cat several times that managed to make dogs look foolish. On this particular morning, dogs hit the track red hot. In a short time they had made a loose within 50 yards of me. Dogs were searching but unable to find the track. As I sat on four wheeler, disgusted , I saw what looked like a cat sitting on a rock, very close to the dogs. Closer observation, proved indeed it was the cat. Watched, as dogs worked very near the cat but it never moved. Finally, decided to force the cat to leave the rock. I got dang close to the cat before it moved off the rock. Dogs were not right there when cat moved ( still searching) got Spike dog to notice track, soon others joined him. It was just a trail job as they advanced the track out of Bakers Creek up over Bingham Mt. in the direction of Powers. That is a very rough area, as JC & Warner 5 know very well. Long story short, I left Bakers creek & drove towards Powers. Could not hear the dogs. faint signal indicated dogs in that direction. Using the tracker when I arrived in powers indicated dogs were up Bingham creek. There is a road at end of Ave. H that runs about half mile up a very rough canyon, to the old powers water supply. When I arrived at end of road, heard Spike & Skinner giving a poor tree job, less than 100 yards up the hill. What a break, I had a frozen shoulder at the time, & luck was sure with me. I arrived and found a cat perched on top of a hunkleberry bush about 3 feet tall. Spike & Skinner were standing back about 15 feet giving a rather weak bay job. I walked within 30 feet of the cat, it just layed on that hunkle berry bush like the wifes house cat laying in it/s chair. I admired the situation, called the dogs, walked away, the cat remained perched as I glanced back the last time. Track had started with 5 dogs, sure if the three young dogs had made the bay up, would have had a different ending. There had been considerable amout of time used in this chase I heard very little of the race. Have been beat lots of times by cats like this one. Hope you enjoy. It is an experience I WILL NEVER FORGET. Thanks Al Baldwin

Hello Al, hope all is well. I like hearing hunt stories. Your story makes me wonder how many bush's that cat used trying to get away from your dogs? From 5 dogs to 2. I'm willing to bet the cat lost those other dogs in simular place's. In the end it sounded almost like a stand off to me. Thanks for sharing. John.
