Young Duke,
I am not from Utah, but noticed no one had responded to you so I will. Your best help is right here on this board. start at the beggining of the lion section and read it all. Your success will come much easier with lion than with bobcat. All you need is a good track in the snow. Do your research with the game department and university and library and MapQuest, get the needed tags and go catch a lion where you have learned that they live and move.
Then, start in on the bobcat section and read it from the beginning. then go out and do the same with the bobcats.
You might not get any responses from people who live close to you and the reasons are many and powerful.
Here is the reason I suggest you get your help from people who do not live close to you: The ethical houndsmen I have known will not return to a place they have been taken without the one that took them there. You will be under that code of ethics as well. So In my mind, it is better for you to get out there and find your own places close to home.
Every houndsmen that has done this very long has been burned by helping a young start-up. This is nothing against you personally, I am just telling you why you should not wait around for help to show up. If you are going to succeed as a cat hunter you will be of the type that is driven and self motivated. I hope you find some one, but you might not. Dont let that stop you. Carry on, and let us know how it is going.
Your best hope for finding local help is an older man that might need a fresh pair of legs to go to the trees for him. He will most likely not be on the internet. If you find him, offer to go without taking your dog. In fact, if you find a man like this, think about finding a new home for your dog. Go with him when ever you can, and learn everything you can about his dogs. Then when he trusts you enough, he might let you buy one of his pups or dogs. That is what you should do.
You will need to respect that mans hunting territorry as long as he is hunting it. ...But if you are like most, you wont be able to do that. And that is why you will not be offered help.
I hope that helps.

Re: help a new guy
i understand that im not gonna take anyones spots cause thats a chump thing to do and it shows that if you take someones spot your a low life and no better than the crap i scrape off the bottom of my shoe im not being rude im agreeing with you all im looking for is a little help training i dont wanna even worry about cat hunting for awhile not untill i get my next dog and thats a few years away im happy with coons for now i just dont want people to think ill take a spot cause i wouldnt i know how pissed id be if someone did it to me. so pretty much this is for coon and cat hunters i just wanna get some road time with him and have him run into more trees. like i said i dont care about runnin a cat i just want my pup to learn stuff i cant teach from older dogs... thanks
Re: help a new guy
Good answer. I have been where you are and I have felt like you feel. One really smart guy once said "seek and ye shall find, knock and the door shall be opened unto you". I got a feeling ye shall find and have the door opened. I hope so. It might not be instant, so dont lose heart. Keep seeking and knocking. In the mean time, keep studying, learning and getting that dog trained up using the methods found here at the college of hounding.
