Just dump the fat scraps in a pan and cook on the stove on about medium heat. Kind of like frying bacon. The liquid is poured through a strainer into containers to cool. I prefer to use old margerin tubs or smaller tupperware type containers that make about bar soap size packages.
Makes an awesome leather dressing. It softens and waterproofs boots better than any commercial product that I have ever tried.
We store the rendered bear fat in the freezer.

We trim ALL red meat off the fat, cut into small pieces, (render quicker) and put in a roaster pan in the oven at a low heat, so as not to scorch and taint the lard. We put ours in 3 lb. coffee cans with a single spoon of baking soda stirred in to keep it from becoming ransid when held a long time and feeze the containers until used. Makes fantastic leather softener and my wife says if you cannot make a pie crust with Bear Lard, you can't make pie crust. Some of the best part of a bear, thats why the old timers always killed at least a bear a year, for meat and lard.

It works tons better if you boil it in water then let it cool. The oil turns white and you can take the crust off. It even separates any dirt/hair etc. No problem with scorching that way. Yes, pies with bear lard crust are tops. Yummy! Also, add a spoonful when pan frying deer/elk meat. Nice enriching flavor.

I also herd that the oils were good for server dry skin. Has anyone used it for that? And does it work?

You can also use bear grease to predict the weather. Strange but true I keep a jar in the window sill.

Re: rendering bear fat?????
I do it using a nesco works good put it on low setting takes awhile but turns out good, strain it into jars. Ask my Dad if he'll ever do it in the house again hahaha my mom darn near killed him because it stunk up the house, so i would advise to do it outside or garage. Try a layer on a frying pan for fried potatos Mmm also i tried i table spoon i n a kettle of chili really brings the flavor. When done with the nesco i put water in it then put it on the steam setting for awhile it helps clean it up good. Another idea i havent tried yet is to grind it up 1st, suppose to help render quicker, ill be trying that this year.
