Hunt with Hector and Hector

Postby Gary Roberson » Thu Jul 19, 2012 12:09 pm

Hector P and his son Hector came up to Menard on Tuesday afternoon to hunt and pick up Sally. After visiting and eating supper, Hector, Hector and I decided to battle the heat and take Sally, Ten and Jill south of town to see what we could find.
Sally is only 14 months old but is making an excellent hound that can already do it all. She is broke on coons and cats as well as any young dog that I have hunted. As all of you know, any time you want show off a hound, horse or kid, they will screw up and that is what I was afraid of.
We did not hit a single track that the dogs could work on Tuesday night as dry conditions and heat and little coon activity were too much for my youngsters to overcome.
The next morning, I picked up Hector and Hector at 5:00 AM and shortly after the first dump, the two pups, Sally and Jill struck at a windmill and blew up treed. Ten was in another direction, so the pups did it by themselves. When we drove to them it did not take long until we found a coon in the tree. An easy one to make up for the evening before.
The next coon we struck was an old track that the dogs trailed for well over a half mile and lost him in a wheat field where there was little ground cover. We burned 45 minutes messing with this one and now it was after sunup. I caught the dogs and went to a water trough where I had seen a lot of tracks last week. The dogs immediately opened and finally picked the trail up on the naked ground where the cattle traffic had stomped out all vegetation. As luck would have it, they trailed to the neighbor's fence where we were lucky enough to catch the dogs.
I decided to move to another pasture to the west and put the dogs down and started roading about 8:00 AM. The dogs struck off the road and did a great job of working a bad track in a steady breeze that had gotten up from the south. Sally did a great job as she showed the talent that I knew she had. The dogs trailed nearly half a mile and all three feel treed. They had a big boar coon in a short snag.
After dispatching the coon, we started back to the truck and the dogs struck another track by the pickup. I told the boys that there was no way the dogs would be able to tree that coon but they made a liar out of me. They went about 400 yards and Jill blew up treed. She had a mess of kittens and I think a porqupine in a black locust tree.
Hector and Hector loaded Sally about 10:30 AM and drove to San Antonio. Later this week they will make the remainder of the trip to Tampico, Mexico. I wish them well and hope that Sally make them as happy as she did me. Hector and Hector are great people and I hope to be friends with them for many years to come.
Adios,
Gary

Gary, thanks for the great hospitaly you and your family gave us. You gave a great description of the work of the hounds. Sally is really a nice hound very good nature. She slept in the hotel room wensday, thursday and friday night with me and she behave very well, never bark and only whining a little.

What I notice of your dogs is that they are very fast, good nose to be able to run in that severe dry conditions with little underbrush, good behavior and always hunting not loosing time in nothing but hunting.

With Sally and the two pups I bought from Guy Ormiston, I am going all blueticks and hope they will suit me for the type of country I hunt. With the climate that is very hot and lots of humidity.

I made it to Tampico on the Saturday afternoon, it was a trip of 3,000 kms with the shopping at San Antonio.

I also hope to be friend for many more years and if the securtiy issue gets better, be able to hunt with you at my fathers or mother in law ranch down here in Mexico.

Mike thanks for your kind words. After not seeing Julio for two years, he has being living at Brownsiville Tx, also for security reasons. I had dinner with him and his family at a Restaurant in Brownsville last Saturday. Doing well and happy living up there.

John, I will post how is Sally coming along down here.

Saludos,

Hector,
I hunted this morning and when I returned, Daisy had started into labor. She has one pup so far and it appears to be big and healthy. She is not finished and I hope she will have at least 4-5 more. This may be asking a lot as she lost 7 two weeks ago.
I am so glad that you returned home safely. Sally is possibly the best natured dog I have ever seen. She is not loud in the kennel and is very affectionate to people once she is familiar with you. I feel she will be an excellent brood female and should cycle before too long.
I treed two coons this morning. Ten, Dan and Jill hit a couple of tracks early that were just too old and could not handle them. I moved to another pasture and they hit a little better track and went into the neighboring ranch 430 yards and treed. I walked in and shot the coon out and called them back to the truck. Just before getting back to the pickup, Ten struck again and the dogs went close to where they had just treed and Jill located and started treeing. I had to walk 500 yards back into the neighboring ranch and shot out coon #2. I was pretty hot so I decided to return to the house and get to work.

Daisy blessed me with four live pups, three males and a female. They are doing well and should get really fat with all the milk they want. Unfortunately, some friends are going to have to wait another year for pups from this cross. I had a list of ten hunters wanting pups from this cross and two of them have been waiting two years. I hope to get pups to the gentlemen who have been waiting the longest and hope that the pups turn out to be worth the wait.
Adios,
Gary
