Snake country

Post by 2ndhound »

A question for you desert rat guys, I am not especially scared of snakes, But I do hunt in areas that have enough rattlers to keep a guy alert.
I am thinking of snake chaps this summer, Do you need boots and chaps?
or are the chaps alone good enough? I usually wear mid calf muck boots when in the snake spots.
But have enough close calls especially at night to get me thinking about it.
also do you think the chaps would double as snow gaiters? or are they too clunky for that,
Any thoughts on brand or types that are pretty good?
Most reviews I have read claim they are all best on the market, so I figured why not ask the
Guys who actually use them
Thanks Ken,

I hunt in cotton mouth moccasin territory ...if you havent had any dealinds with them , folks say they will come after .This is not my opinion however , ive had several several close encounters and pretty sure ive been "popped" at least once , I didnt see it but felt it looked down and like to have killed my self getting away . I have also stepped on them but they didnt hit me .That bein said I use the old "froglegs that WICK use to sell ,DANS BRIAR PROOF CLOTHING has the patent now and they are still sewed together by the Amish folks . I wear mine alot and they keep me dry as long as the water doesnt come over the top . They are the "chaps" style and hook to my belt . Mine have Lacrosse rubber boots on them but they sell a pair that have snake proof boots . and the leggings themselves "1000 cordura" are briar and snake proof . They are light weight water ,Im assuming snow , and snake proof , I have tested mine over and over again and will vouch that they are a quality product go to DANSBRIARPROOFCLOTHING.COM

Thanks for the reply, nope never had dealings with moccasin type snakes just rattlers,
and a few 2 legged snakes!
most of the rattlers I encounter are the great basin variety, not real big, not all that agressive, but sneaky and real good at being where my foot goes.
Thats why I was wondering if chaps were over kill for me or if some type of gaiter may be sufficent, hmm still thinking, got plenty of time considering the time of year in utah.
actually I have considered the subject for years, But this year my niece got hit twice by a copperhead and was telling me about the hospital bills she incurred and that got me thinking again,
For such a small investment why not? seems like pretty cheap insurance coupled with a little caution seems worth it to me unless there is some major down side to the things.
And before anyone calls BS no it didnt happen in Utah, far as I know copperheads dont live here.
anyway I will check put that site and thanks
Ken
