How did the old timers do it?

Post by runnin akita »

There has been a lot of talk about wolfs latly. Everone says there hard to get rid of. So how did the dam things get eraticated from so many parts of the states. Even Yellowstone didnt have them tell a bunch of idiots brought them back. Now the elk herds there are being desimated. So what happend way back when that got rid of them in somany places to begin with? Sounds like it might be something to look into. Also I was told that a wolf is the only animal that will kill for fun not for food is that true?

Simple- shoot on sight and keep shooting tell you’re out of bullets.

I don't think they kill for fun-could be wrong- I think they are very territorial and kill anything that threatens their hunting ground or is even in there hunting ground.

I am sure there is somebody here who is a wolf expert and can set us straight.

We are stuck with wolves for good. The old time method for eradication was the use of 1080.....cyanide capsule poisons, traps, snares and guns. This is why this is so dangerous today vs. then. We are a forgiving society that will put up with more stupidity based on feel good policy that in the end will result in our own demise for not addressing Global issues in the same fashion as wolves. Vermin is vermin! Eradicate it or it will eradicate you.

You probably aren't old enough to remember the gift that kept on giving. Killing target species such as wolves and well beyond with non targeted species like hawks, eagles and more killing ways than you can shake a stick at. I copied some information about some of the early day methods. You decide if we are stuck with wolves in the lower 48?

Aerial application of 10/80 poison is banned in the U.S due to "the extreme hazard to human health and to the environment" (from the United States Environment Protection Agency)

There is NO ANTIDOTE for 10/80 poison - classified as a "super toxic" poison, it takes 1/500 of an ounce to kill a 68kg man. The poison is also a male reproductive toxin, and according to the U.S PA there is insufficient data on the effects of low residual doses of 10/80 on human health

After an aerial drop there is no control over 10/80 poison - minute quantities plus poisoned carcasses can be washed downhill into streams and water supplies

A poisoned possum can travel 5kms or more before it dies.

Truly ugly stuff. Quite possibly the only way out of the mess created by our Federal Government. Pay close attention to how the wolf plays out here in Oregon. Long after sport hunting is by the way side, the money tree will blossom in Salem to manage the wolf. Another crisis created by Government to create bigger Government for the long haul!

Thank God there is no aerial application of 1080 or even salted areas. I have seen it and I have seen dead hounds and hunting dogs stacked up. Newhouse traps are what eradicated most of the wolves before killer chemicals were seen. That and good old stay at it and don't back off and collect bounty. You are not likely to see this again . When I was a kid and 1080 was still being used I never saw a coyote till I was near 12 years old but I caught bobcats with the family bird dog close to the place. that sounds good and it was fun but let me tell you let them dogs stray a little and they never came back. Almost no hounds around there in those days cuz they would die the minute they ran over the hill and stuck their nose down and picked up a pill> Not good! In our so sensitive kind world now spreading wolves and grizzly bears around is a good way to keep the sorts of us out of the forest. Reckon they done their homework?

My inlaws have some old black and white photos of Government hunters making 10-80 poison bait balls. The dropped them from a Cessena on the mountain and winter ranges. I do not see that happening anytime soon. Also have a journel on wolves attacking their stock in Colorado, plus photos of a wolf hunter. He had some dang mean looking dogs. Still he lost a lot of them to the wolves he was hunting.

My great grandpa was a wolf/cougar/predator hunter in the coos county area,pre-1900 in fact he settled the very land we live on now. Back in those day's government would give a bounty for wolves and later cougar. My grandpa is 95 and his mind is still like a steel trap, I will go visit him today and ask about his dad and the wolf bounty. Men from that time were special, they were onrey, beyond tough and resilliant. They beat the predators out of this country so it could be settled. Hopefully I will post back by this evening or tomorrow morning after talking to grandpa. Good post. John.

Wow that does sound like nasty stuff. It seem to me like it would hurt a lot of non target game. Was the wolf the only thing that pushed out of the state or was there other game? It also would seem to me you wouldnt want to use this if you wanted to collect a bounty you would have them dieing away from your bait. I guess a lot of the old timers didnt care though they just wanted them gone? I am interested in what your Granfather says John Thanks.
