what to do....
what to do....
I have a plott that is about 11 months old and am having some issues with her. Her parents are proven bear dogs i had the sister to the dog i got now and she was running bobcat when she was 6 months old and doing very well but i she got killed when she was about 8 months. So i got her full sister and been out hunting with her 6 or 7 times now and she is not showing much interest in killed game/running with the other dogs or trailing on hot tracks for very long at all. What are the best ways to go about this? look for a new hound, keep working with her, let her mature so more? Any help would be appreciated.....

Give her a little more time. Just because they are related does not mean they will always develop at the same rate as their siblings. Try again in a few months. If she shows interest great, if not wait a couple more. If you really like the dog, give her a little time she'll come around.

keep running her, don't give up. I got 1 puppy at 6 wks and she was dry-trailing at 8 months, so I got her littermate brother at 11 months. He didn't do anything until he was almost 2 yrs, even with caught lions jumping in front of him and lions in his face on the ground. But he finally turned on and now he is solid and dry-trailing right with his sister. Not all dogs are equal.

Sometimes a caged coon will help switch them on.

Re: what to do....
i am helping train this pup and run coyotes almost every weekend with a group of guys and she has had plenty of opportunities to be around other dogs and coyotes and coons. She hasnt shown any interest in staying with the dogs when they open up and get something moving. she goes and hunts with them but will run back to a person once they have one going. A couple days ago we have a coyote that was shot and still alive and this pup was the first dog to it because i leashed her up and walked her on the track until we got to the coyote. she smelled it but wouldnt bark and pay any attention to it. once the other dogs got to the coyote and tore into it she stayed away from that. I know many dogs are late bloomers but the last few pups we have had atleast showed interest in the dead ones.
Re: what to do....
drag a dead coyote behind the truck or whatever vehicle you have while she is loose. get ahead of her and hide so she has to use her nose to find you.when you start to get out of sight most pups will open up . get out and stand by the coyote ,and when she comes up to you and the coyote praise her up good.an object going away poses no threat ,and also brings out there instincts to chase.the fact that she is chasing after her owner also overrides any fears.they are more worried about loosing sight of you.now dont run your dog over or get in an accident trying to outrun her.this technique has worked numerous times for me starting pups. it should wake a dog that age up. it sounded like she was overwhelmed a little for the hunt .if she does nothing on the drag she is just not ready to hunt if she does good try her again with the other dogs.i know some people have patience enough to wait till they are 2more power to them, but on average i believe a hound at 8 to 9 years old is starting to go the other way .my ? is do you want to waste a quarter of a dogs hunting life not to mention your hunting time and money to find out whether it is a dud or not. you could raise more in the meantime that will go.good luck with the training ,and let us know if the drag works for her.

Not all pups make it, there can be superstars and culls within the same litter. You need to ask yourself how long are you willing to give this dog a chance or start over with something else. Sometime when you have a dead coyote laying there that you just got and the other dogs are chewing on it strap your leash around it and start pulling it away from all the dogs, this will sometimes fire up a young dog, make it look like the coyote is trying to get away. Good Luck, hope your hound comes around for you..

Re: what to do....
we appreciate the suggestions from all of you that posted. We did not try any of them yet because Kona the pup seems to be real interested in chasing after this weekend. She jumped 2 coyotes on her own and ran 2 all way to the kill and ran another that got away.
I walked her in on a spotted coyote and took a 2 hour old track and she took it fast. Didnt open on the cold track until she got it jumped and then she was just a singing. She ran that one until it was dead with 2 other dogs. She even got in on the bay up and fought, has a cut to prove it. She ran one right after that with the same 2 dogs and that one was killed within 15 minutes and she stuck right with them. the 3rd one she ran she jumped by her self. she cold tracked it into a slough and then opened up in the slough when she got it jumped. She still has a lot to improve on but she is showing some good signs!
