I am lining up a vet to do a semen draw on one of my male dogs, and then shipping it quite a ways.
Can some of you that have dealt with this before give me some thoughts of things I don't want to overlook?
I had a talk with the vet the other day and he talked about having to get a ship kit from something like the International K9 Semen Bank or something to that effect.
He also talked about shipping at the optimal time for when the female will take the best, when she will be "ready". Sometimes the weekend may interfere with getting it there at the right time.
What is the feeling of the UKC and AKC for registering pups that are conceived this way? Is it any different?
Thanks in advance for sharing your insight and wish me luck. If all goes well these should make great pups.

why dont you have them ship you the female? it is alot easier and alot less hastle as least for me. my family ships alot of horse seemen and that is because we cant afford to take the chance of our studs or mares getting hurt on transportation, we cant fly them. (feasably).

shipping the female . . . .
I gave that some thought, but it didn't add up for us.
To ship the female we have to buy a crate, that is upwards of 60 or 70 dollars. Then we have to pay to have a vet check done, and then pay the airline more then 200 dollars for the ticket. Now we only have to buy the crate once, and may be able to get away with one vet check if all goes well, but all said we will pay minimum 500 dollars round trip for the female.
My vet says he can do a semen draw for $75. The shipping kit from the International Canine Semen Bank is $50, and it can be re-used except for the actual container that the semen goes into. Add to that the cost to over-night ship the semen to the owner of the female, and we will be quite a bit ahead of shipping the female from there to here and back again.
I used to do some AI when I was working in the Dairy industry and it really isn't that tough to warm a product up in warm water and put it where it needs to go. It may not be for city boys, meaning some folks may get a weak stomach from it, but it can be done without the help of a vet if you know what to do. So for about the cost of a good puppy we could get the breeding done and 63 days later KA-BOOM ! ! PUPPIES.
I do a bit of Quarter Horse breeding from time to time. In fact I am looking for a good stud to breed a mare to now. And I see what you mean about shipping a mare. Seems like the cost of mare care when you ship a horse somewhere for a breeding can add up faster then the cost of stud fee sometimes. That is a hobby that can add up faster then hounds I think.
Anyone ever use the service of the International Canine Sperm Bank portable mobile lab? They will be in my area next month. Was just wondering if it would be worth it to use the sevice just to have semen cold and ready to ship at a moments notice?
Thanks for the thoughts.
