Line breeding discussion
Line breeding discussion
Ok we all know that CJC, and JTG are strong supporters of the line breeding. It sounds great. What are the negatives to using this method? What happens if a breeder selects a bad mating, IE: a dog fighter or disease but it was a recessive trait in that dog? Then he would have to start all over again? Im just trying to wrap my head around it. In lamens terms only please, nothing complicated.
Re: Line breeding discussion
With any breeding one needs to look hard at the generations of dogs behind the dogs you are breeding. If they have faults why would you breed. With line breeding these faults will show up sooner but can also be eliminated quicker. Their are so many traits that need to be looked at in breeding a hunting dog getting dogs that warren breeding or line breeding is a ruff road to walk down. It is easy if you are looking at one or even two traits, treeing or train ability. To have the conformation, heart, brains, ability to cold trail, move a cold track, treeing ect... all in two dogs that you want to mate maybe hard to find. If you don't try you will never have it. I have culled hole litters which was hard to do out of a dog that was one of the best that I have ever owned years ago. I never bred her again. It takes more years and commitment to breeding good dogs than most people take the time to do. You can also breed your favorite to a good dog and get good pups or not. You don't know until you try.
