Hunting in the course of the year

Postby hypsilon » Wed Jul 10, 2013 2:32 pm

We have a nice discussion at moment, how much do you hunt in the states with your dogs/hounds and how?

In Germany, the hunting year starts in April, So I`ll start here, only mentioning the main things:

April:
-stalking wild boars, that go out to damage the grasslands, working some blood trails...

- in the End of April: drawing out the young foxes with the Terriers (until middle of may)

May:
- starting the roe deer hunt (bucks (until middle of october) & one yeared females(until middle of January), working some blood trails

June:
- start of the red deer hunt (only the young of the last year, until
- little roe and boar hunting
- blood-trailing if neccesary

July:
- Rut of roe deer

August:

the corn becomes milk-ripe

- starting hunting wild boar in corn
- all red deer is allowed to hunt (until end of January)

September:
- Hunting all roe deer
- starting the waterfowl hunt
- wild boar hunting in corn

Oktober:

- driven-hunt season starts (primely on hooved game), 2-3 hunts every week, until middle/end of January)

November/December(/January):

- all kinds of hunting (waterfowl, foxes under and above earth, boars, deer, hare....with dog, without dog...)

February:

-varmint-hunting, but barely with bushing hounds...hooved game needs repose...
-boar- stalking

March:

- a little bit wild boar stalking, where neccesary (esp. greenland-damages)

Now you...;-)

Pretty easy for me.
Jul to Early Oct, bear season
Oct -Nov, little coon but not much since it's deer season
Dec-Mid Apr, cat or yotes depends on snow conditions, little coon in Apr
Mid Apr-Jun, nothing but maybe take the dogs for a ride, leash law in effect.

East Texas
My crew is centered around hunting hogs with dogs, but we love to hunt anything.
September: usually hunt doves two or three times
October: bow season for whitetail deer opens (we don't run dogs during any open deer season), squirrel season, we usually squirrel hunt four or five times.

November thru the middle of January: youth, rifle, and muzzleloader whitetail season.

January until it gets too hot (about the middle of May): hunt hogs three or four times a week.

May thru September: hog hunting at night or the morning after a good rain.

Also, we hunt ducks some in January.

Arizona hunt All year with dogs for Lion, bobcat and/or fox, I don't fill my lion tag until its Bobcat/Fox season August 1st. We are allowed one lion a year and its all year again. Bobcat and fox is August 1-march 31. As long as I don’t take a lion before August 1st then I can be in the field with my dogs all year. Hunting from my house mainly from around 5 am til 7am most morns unless I can take a day off and go for longer.

May also travel to another mtn range and go after Black bear this year using my dogs, can’t use dogs for bear in my back yard.

I also hunt White-tailed deer from the house in what ever season I get drawn for usually November for a week.

Also hunt elk. Usually cow in northern AZ if I get drawn. IF not drawn in Arizona we try out of state usually New Mexico or Idaho. This year I have a cow elk tag for northern AZ and a bull elk tag for Idaho(may shoot some wolves while there too)
